Used to go there quite a bit, but about 15/20 years ago. A magical place.

There was a visitors buoy in a small sort of anchorage, then a little harbour for small boats, with a slipway. Used to take the visitors buoy, then dinghy round to the slipway, just round the corner. Dead easy but not many went by boat Dunno why.

The walk across the island is really strange, with all the big house built by some lord that took pity on the place. Then the church with supposedly 20,000 saints buried there. The history at the little musium is well worth reading. You just put some money in a box and helped your self.

AS wer'e sort of in the area again, thought we might visit again. Is it the same???

Is it the same???

Well the Island is still there and by all accounts the same shape :D but I didnt even know there was a landing stage there ???

Every time I have been past it has always been good to pop out of the channel, never ever thought of stepping on the island.......

OK when are you going this could be a good N Wales excursion.

I was there for a few days about 18 months ago.

We anchored in the bay on the E side - I would recommend choosing settled weather. Which is probably why so few stop over. There is a lot of kelp & rocks close inshore. There is a mooring there, but it is used by the tourist ferry & will either have their inflatable or the Ferry on it.

Come on Tom, read the OP, it is a slipway not a jetty & fine for landing by dinghy. We enjoyed the walk up the hill to look down on the gannets plunging into the sound. There is also a hide on the E side but you can observe the wildlife just as well by sitting down quietly for half an hour or so out in the open.

One word of warning, there are now hundreds of "singing seals" there - but I wouldn't describe their noise as singing tho'; it is more of a persistent moaning or wailing. There is a short lull from around 2am to 5am, but the rest of the day the noise can be quite irritating. Baby seals are very inquisitive & will follow the dinghy or swimmers.

All in all, an excellent short stay location, but no supplies available. Pic below shows ferry dink with seal in it. It stayed there for 48 hrs so I hate to think what it must have smelt like when the ferry passengers next came to use it!

Been a couple of years since we landed there but there is a very sheltered bay next to the slip theat you can anchor up in. There is a small sanded reef there which is great for snorkelling over as you can see all the big spider crabs. You can still go ashore but there is nothing there apart from the views. No dogs are allowed ashore by the way. Keep well away from the ferry though as he doesnt take prisoners, as a diver friend on mine found out.

Wont agree about there being nothing there. There's a church, a museum and last I knew, about twenty folk lived there all year, with more in the summer. But there used to be hundreds and even a school. The history is quite fascinating.

Tom, you dont go through the sound, the harbours on the other side. Well maybe through the sound, then turn right.

Dunno about the no dogs rule and the buoy used to say visitors on it.

The seals can become quite affectionate of your dinghy, which gets interesting.

Carry on round and if you come to the light house, you've gone to far. Less of course yer going the other way.
