Can anyone recommend any nice small ports between Barcelona and Gibraltar, I have been to Alicante, not small but very, very nice, just wondering if the cruise down to Gib had anything that does not resemble benidorm?

Try Cartagena, it is a small Naval Port, but marina & town are good & not a 'touristi' place. Good welcome & resteraunt at the Clun Nautico.
Also there is a small harbour west of Almeria that you can anchor off, good eating places on seafront & typically small spanish town.

I'll second Cartagena - once you take a 10 walk into town there are some fabulous squares and old architecture - gives very much an old world Spanish feel.

Depends, to a great extent when you're going>

I'm pulling the boat out of the water at Frontignan Plage in June and coming back to the UK for 10 weeks.

Try the following (out of season)

Port Ginesta 41*15'N 01*55'E - large, well-appointed marina, good shops & facilities

Puerto de Sitges 41*14'N 01*49'E - ideal for visiting very attractive Sitges town, nasty swell in SW winds

Port Esportiu for Tarragona 41*05'N 01*13'E, can't now get into the Club nautico in the main harbour, probably dodgy entrance in strong S winds

Puerto de L'Ametlla de Mar 40*53'N 00*48'.1E, fishing harbour, very economical good bars round the port but some distance into town

Puerto de L'estany Gras 40*52'N00*47'E, old natural harbour very picturesque, cheap, no facilities anchor or go alongside

Puerto des Siles 39*40'N 00*12'W, large artificial harbour famous, venerable town of Sagunto nearby, sacked by Carthage, rebuilt by Rome, Moors, Spanish etc.

Puerto de Cullera 39*09'N 00*14'W, harbour up R Júcar, nice old town overshadowed by horror ziggurats for happy holidaymakers

Puerto de Dénia 38*51'N 00*08'E, new marina just built just inside old port to port as you enter - probably OK

Puerto de Jávea 38*48'N 00*11'E, yachtie & FV harbour (closest to Ibiza) or anchor in Cala de Fontana to SW of town, not too far in, it shelves from the entrance quickly to >2m.

Puerto de Moraira 38*41'N 00*08'E about the only all weather harbour on this stretch of coast, fairly attractive surroundings, or anchor opposite the entrance near the beach at el Rinconet in 2m water (not in S or SW winds)

Puerto Deportivo Luis Campomanes 38*38'N 00*00, bang on the meridian (if using WSG 84), is very popular and in a strikingly mountainous coast.

Alicante 38*20'N 00*29'W Large mixed harbour, scene of Primo de Rivera's demise, good big marina in town with lots of facilities and nitelife

Puerto de Torrevieja 37*58'N 00*41'W Clean harbour, good anchorage or marina (but authorities trying to ban all anchoring in ports in Valencia area because they can't charge under Spanish law)

Puerto de Tomás Mestre - entry waypoint 37*44'.3N 00*43'.4W inside the Mar Menor 1.5M from sea up a canal - good as a base to explore Mar Menor.

Cartagena 37*35'N 00*59'W Navy, commercial & FV port, Club Nautico demands old-fashioned intro by member, possibly the oldest port in the W Med, anchoring totally forbidden in harbour or approaches, marina in N end of harbour

Alméria 36*50'N 02*28'W - unwelcome in main harbour but go to YC due N of end of main Digue de Poniente

Almerimar 36*42'N 02*47'W whole area plastic sheeted for veg growing but this is a fairly pleasant modern marina with lots of bars, discos etc - marina co went bust in 2000 but reports suggest new co carrying on OK - great Moorish alcazar worth a visit

Now in Andalucia and the Junta's marinas.
