Great little proper sea boat,

Anyways, Wessex Yacht Sales in plymouth,,, (I Think its them anyways) are selling a completed hull, and the MOULDINGS for the Barbican 30, for.....

£12500.

Or at least I think that was the price....

Is it just me or does that seem one heck of a bargain for someone to bang out proper boats, and have a start on one already ????

It does sound like a very reasonable price for a set of mouldings.

Found a Barbican 30 for sale for 36k here : http://marinedirectory.ybw.com/boat/new/boat_details1.jsp?id=41590&curr_id=1

I think that the Barbican 30 followed on from the Halmatic 30 - there are a few for sale on the internet - here is one at http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1594140/0 for 25k.

And here is one for 28.75k : http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1603010/0

And lots of info about them on Yachtsnet at : http://www.yachtsnet.co.uk/archives/halmatic-30/halmatic-30.htm

Sounds good, but if you are intent on fitting out yourself, reckon on at least twice the cost of the hull.... based on my limited experience. Built a 28' in the 80's Hull cost 3.5k, total spend 11k. 90% thru current project, hull cost 18k, projected total circa 54k.hth...and if you go for it the best of luck!

I had a Halmatic 30 (same mould as Barbican 30) for 15 years - great sea boat. If finishing your own, improve on the Halmatic's attachments for the inner shrouds - an aluminium postcard embedded in the layup is not sufficient!

I had the same problem - the deck above the attachment started cracking in 45kts of Tramontana! Otherwise, as you say great boats and Mike Spry made some sensible changes when he started building the Barbican 30. We took ours (Halmatic 30, not Barbican)to the Med and back and apart from the above, never had a moments worry with her.

I have the same problem with my Halmatic and had it down to do this winter. How did you repair yours - did you change the anchorage arrangements for the lower shrouds?

To be fair, it wasn't me but Emsworth boatyard that did mine. When we bought her (1989 and 10 years old) the original meagre chainplates had been replaced with very substantial stainless structures which really spread the load. The starboard one was through-bolted through the bulkgead and into the heads, the problem was the port side. The same massive construction was through-bolted into the aft face of what was, on most Halmatics I think, the drinks locker (ours had a radar in there!) and that structure was not bonded to the hull so all the vertical forces were transmitted straight to the deck chainplate. The solution was to replace the wood with a stronger (thicker) piece, bond it strongly to the hull side and then re-bolt the chainplate. We sold the boat a couple of years later, but the problem never re-occurred in our ownership. Good luck!
