I'm thinking of fitting a calorifier and am trying to source the replacement hollow bolt to take hot water from the engine casing. Thought it was called a banjo bolt but googling that seems to not bring up what I'm after.

Any thoughts on what I'm looking for is called, please?

Yep banjo bolt is what they are called.

Google for banjo fittings then you will find the banjos and the bolts but a seach for banjo bolt works for me
 
Banjo bolt and banjo couplings do exist, your description is correct. Normally found on hydraulic or fuel line fittings, not so much on water hoses.
If you Google fuel or hydraulic fitting suppliers, you should find what you were looking for.
 
A banjo union would be unusual for such a purpose, are you sure it's not a hose tail? not saying its not a banjo, just offering a suggestion.

what engine is it going on, some already have input and outputs for calorifiers and you can buy the correct fittings for the engine, 'off the shelf'.

Engine is a Bukh DV36 and there are drain plugs but no dedicated take-offs for a calorifier. They will take a 14mm thread and looking at the Volvo website they call it a 'hose nipple'. I think that's what I'm after. Is that the correct name and if so does anyone have thoughts on a supplier. I know Bukh UK will do it and the guys in there are great but they do want an arm and a leg for anything with Bukh on it. I know it's not their fault but still, would like to find what I'm after somewhere that will not impact on my budget so much.....

Look for "hose tail"

ASAP supplies have some (gunmetal, brass or DZR) but i dont know if they have the size you want. BSP, UNF, NPT but may not have metric

As I suggested earlier in the thread, it’s called a hose tail, if you can identify the thread then you need that thread to whatever heater hose bore you will be using.
So, an example would be say, ¾” BSP to 5/8 hose tail, they are freely available from places like ASAP, Aquafax and most decent chandlers.
 
I sheared the banjo bolt on the diesel line to my engine in 2002. I found a bolt with the same thread, bored it up the middle, and bored a couple of holes in the sides. Too impatient to source a proper replacement. My home made one is still doing the job fine after ten years.

Can I ask what type of Johnson pump you used? Is there a special spec for raw water use?

I refer you to the same page. The Johnson part number is quoted there.

I am told that there may be a cheaper type. Apparently some Mercedes cars have a magnetic drive pump that circulates coolant through the heater matrix when the engine is stopped, to maintain some heat in the passenger area for a while. This may be (?) cheaper than the Johnson variety. Does anyone have info on this please?
