Baltic - Holding tanks. What\'s the score

Intend cruising the Baltic for the next couple of of years but have been advised that holding tanks are now 'de rigeur'since 2005. for all boats in the Baltic. Does anyone have experience of the current situation.

Yep, holding tanks are needed in the Baltic nowadays.
Good thing is that the infrastructure is in place to support their use. Many pump-out stations and often no charge for their use...

No requirement in Sweden.except on canals.

Do you know if grey water can be discharged? We've got a (small) holding tank for the black water but the only info I've seen says you need a holding tank for "all waste water" (this is for the Aland islands).

You only need a holding tank for black water in Finland including Åland.

Holding tanks are a requirement for new vessels. Existing vessels tanks may discharge heads at sea as before.
Most, but not all, harbours and marinas have pump out facilities. It is worth installing tanks if on a prolonged visit as you may not discharge in harbours, anchorages etc

In Finland also older vessels are required to have holding tanks fitted. My friend is currently struggling to fit one in his 45 year old wooden baot. There are no exceptions I believe. Discharge is permitted more than 12 miles from land, which is difficult to reach when sailing around the Finnish and Swedish archipeligos. Visiting yachts without holding tanks are supposed to seal the heads or something.
