ballast needs support/suspension from hull planks

my ballast sits between the hull planking underneath and the floor boards on top. I'm told they need tar - but with very little space how can i raise them off the planking - I suppose sacrificial soft wood isn't an option. I'm worried they're going to corrode their way through the hull given enough time.

On my old pilot boat I had granite blocks for ballast that sat on the planking. I never had any problems with them. What is your ballast made of?

How about putting a sheet of tarred roofing felt down between the blocks and the planks - the type the put below the tiles, not the gravel overed type. Dont know the trade name for it.
