Hello, has anyone left their boat in the bahamas for the hurricane season and if so, where? The boat is at present in Antigua, but we are heading up north this january. Thanks. Alan
You will, hopefully, get some answers with more current information but I would leave a boat in Nassau. It has good travel connections and several marinas with good security. I haven't sailed in the Bahamas since 2001 so the marinas may have changed hands a few times, but Nassau Yacht Haven just to the east of the bridge is one I would recommend. There are a couple of others on the south side of the harbour and there is Hurricane Hole Marina on the north side.
The harbour is quite well protected but a hit from a big hurricane would still be devastating - as it would be anywhere else.
Unless they have changed the rules again you can leave a boat for a year without paying duty and that can be extended further with an annual payment which used to be $500.
Hope this helps.
