The bagpipery is not going well as i have been ignored by a potential teacher. I bet i wd've been dead good as well. A great shame. Nevertheless, i am determined to make a screechy wailing noise at any opportunty and have taken up the fiddle.

Forgot to mention it but I reckon the lack of pressure to inflate the bagpipe reservoir probably down to playing also two recorders at the same time, one up each nostril?

Shame

I can't use this now.

Would anyone hearing it know the difference between going well and not going well?

You would'nt know anything about this perchance?

How do I learn

Hi guys, I bought some bagpipes to impress some mates thinking they'd be dead easy cos I play the flue. However I can't get a note out them. I'm recently retired and am really keen to learn. I live in a flat in central London and am concerned about the effect on my neighbours. What should I do?

Hi tcm

Welcome to the forum.

It may be that the pipes you purchased are the cheap sort that are only good for display. There are a number of them available for purchase, and they are very difficult (if even possible) to play. Even if you have good quality pipes, they can be tricky to set up for playing.

Most pipers start out learning on a practice chanter(PC). It is usually too difficult to jump in on full pipes. Once you learn the fingerings, style of playing, and memorize a few tunes on PC, then you can move up to a goose - or pipes with some drones plugged. Then move on to playing the full pipes. This approach can take 6 mo to a year before starting to play full pipes.

As doc suggested - it is most important to get an instructor. There are things that need to be learned correctly from the beginning that are difficult with just a book. You don't want to learn any bad habits that will need to be fixed later.

Please post any questions you have - maybe some more info on the pipes you purchased - and try to find an instructor who can help you get started. A local pipe band will probably help you out, if there is one around.

If you're recently retired you have an advantage over many learner pipers. You'll have plenty of time on your hands. Echoing what the chaps said above, you won't go far wrong with finding someone nearby who'd help you out. Sometimes a forum isn't much help with the hands-on stuff like trying to determine the reason behind instrument problems. Someone with a wee bit of knowledge could probably diagnose the problem on the spot.

You can't get a note out at all? Have you taken the chanter out of the stock and tried to get a note out just by mouth blowing?

If you can't get a note out of the pipes I wouldn't worry about the effect on your neighbours.

If you need piping contacts in London I'm sure some of the members of this forum can point you in a good direction.

All the best, have fun!

If you really would like to find out more, you can visit the Piping Society of London who meet in a number of places including the London Scottish TA Centre in Victoria as they give lessons and can put you in touch with a band later on.

How can I tell what kind of pipes I've got? I got them for £120 off ebay.

Well if you post the reference for the bagpipe sale, or the link to the page, other people can also look at the pictures, even though the auction is over for about three months.

Or you can take them along to someone who plays the pipes and ask them.
