Been driving on the M5 and M6, and noticed a few cars and vans flying some sort of warning flags. They consist of a red cross on a white background, and, for all the world, look similar to the flag of St George.

Is this some sort of public penalty imposed by magistrates for bad driving?

I wondered what all those little flags are for /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ally\'s Forgotten Army

The flags on cars are flown by people supporting England in the forthcoming world cup. No, not the cricket world cup, nor the rugby world cup but the soccer world cup. England is in fact unique in all the world in having won all three of these trophies.

Anway, the soccer world cup is held every 4 years,or if you're in Scotland, not very often at all .

Ok, so Scotland do sometimes go along to make up the numbers if they're a bit short of teams, but there is actually another stage AFTER the two or three group matches. Yes, it's true - it isn't simply a 1-week-overseas-drinkathon, but in fact the winners of those groups compete against each other and eventually one of them wins a cup!

Now, it's not actualy a "cup" like a teacup, but made of metal, a bit like the Scottish FA Cup, same rules too - except that the teams have to be really very good at football - even better than Gretna or Hearts. Actually, quite a lot better than Hearts or Gretna. Imagine that! Okay, not so hard to imagine really, but I'm just trying to give you an idea of it all.

hope this helps

Re: Ally\'s Forgotten Army

Everyone should know that the correct etiquette requires a cross of St George to be flown from the starboard side if your car has a value over 25K and port side when visiting France when a tiny tricolor ma be flown from the stbd as a gesture.

There is a similar badge of demerit awarded to very poor scotch drivers:

Apparently there is a strong correlation between scotchmen daft enough to believe the french of all people would be of any use to them in a war against the English and those whose driving skills are at a low ebb. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Apparently there is a similar correlation between those who think that men from Scotland are called 'Scotch' or 'Scotchmen' and those who's IQ's are only measured in double figures when a decimal place is added.

I don't buy all this 'Scots' for people and 'Scotch' for whisky malarky - if you don't like the way the English use their own language, stop speaking it and try making up your own language instead! Oh and when I say your own, I mean your own, not the the one the Scots tribe bought with them from Ireland when they invaded and conquered you and renamed the land after themselves. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

At least Scotland has one unassailable claim to fame - the only country in the history of the world to be successfully conquered and subjugated by the Irish! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's funny, I used to quite like the Scottish until I acquired a Scottish nationalist as a brother-in-law! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

scot, scottish, scotch.

oh be fair - you'd be narked if others called you "Englandish" wouldn'tcha?

English B*stards, and Scots or Scottish Gits. Easy!

"Scotch Gits" are customs officials when you try and bring in too much duty free.

Actually – it’s Scots for the people and (repeat this slowly if it helps) ‘Whisky’ for Whisky.

There is nothing wrong with the language – just the poor education ‘dan saff’ that leaves the natives to poorly equipped to converse in it, or write it down. Or it may just be that the decimal point in your IQ has slipped another place to the left. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Actually the Scots and the Picts were of a very similar racial stock (celts) and merged in most areas due to this. Prior to this Caledonia was very sparsely populated anyway.
I’m not sure if this was supposed to cause offence? Personally I like the Irish a lot so it makes no odds to me. If you want to talk about invaded and subjugated though – does the word ‘Romans’ mean anything to you..? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Aye - I bet they really wish they'd done what the Yanks do - don't teach anyone else how to play the game but still call it a 'World Series/Cup'!

LOL - that's rich from a country with a lower average IQ than England and an education service that is largely funded (along with all your other services) by the English tax-payer!

Merged? I love it! I must remember that one! I guess as most of you now only speak English, you must've 'merged' with us as well! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

As for the Romans, at least when they left we still spoke the same language and called the country the same name as before they arrived, more than can be said for pictland!

Since they dropped at least 7 catches in the last Test I'd doubt your "learned to catch a cricket ball" - but what does a Scotsman know about cricket ? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
