Instead of buying Machine Marts cheapest I bought a more expensive one! Had light use over last few years but polishing prop today it went pop!

Smell of burning and sparking at the brushes. Took them out and cleaned them but no joy - motor turns but brushes leave a trail of 25mm of sparks.

I assume the motor windings are shorting.

My Bosch Drill expired last year with same symptom. I was being naughty though and loading the drill using it to mix tile adhesive. Not overloading the polisher though.

Anyone willing to offer an opinion on whats wrong and why?

Tried expensive so now gone for a e bay special 1400W and 6 speeds with mops etc and other kit £50! I can buy three of these for what I paid for the quality one that is now kaput.

Very noticeable when looking at electrical tools that across a wide price range they appear absolutely identical - only the colours and labels/names are changed - to protect the innocent!!

I bought one of the ebay cheapos and it has survived being used to polish all the topsides after lift-out and the rest of the boat a couple of weeks ago. It’s a little heavier than some of the more expensive models which hasn’t proved to be a problem.

Which foam pads do you recommend? I’ve shredded the ones that came with the polisher through carless contact with deck fittings.

Are the brushes worn down to the point where they should be renewed ?

Are you using it in conjunction with a generator?

I am interested in the answer to this question as I do run a generator, nothing special, a 5kVA set that is regulated with a spring on some torque arm set up, certainly not a voltage stabilised output. What implication would this have for power tools, especially if I use them for long periods such as a polishing mop or sanding disc?

To answer all questions in one go!

I have blue base and white foam pads but none survive hitting other objects. For Polishing prop I usually use Sisal Disc on 9" angle grinder and a "brick" of metal polish I think I bought these from a metal polishing company based in Salisbury called IIRC Moderola. Couldn't find the centre spindle yesterday so tried using polisher instead - bad move on my part not enough power/speed as you need to press it on the brick to melt the grinding paste into the mop!

Brushes were about 25mm long - not worn down at all.

Straight of 220V mains no generator used.

I have a geny which powers my tools. I haven't been unfortunate enough yet to experience what another friend has.
His generator, not being the inverter type, spiked his drill twice which took out the circuit board on the variable speed control. So he was on his third (Bosch) drill before being told of what's happening.

My one, an ALDI special has been going fine for 5 years, both boat topsides and all family vehicles (although the cars don't get done more than twice a year).
