As my boat has a single engine I am wondering what would be the minimum hp outboard to use on my boat as a backup/get me home/safe engine? There are numerous wrecks up to 30 miles from shore round here an I would like to think that I could at least get home (or to a safe port) if my mercruiser engine should have issues. Range would be say 30 miles as in if I cross the channel to the UK (which I may decide to do at some point when conditions are right) my longest stint is about 50 miles and there are numerous wrecks up to 30 miles offshore which I intend to go to if safe ...
Main purpose is as a backup but I would like to use the engine for some lure trolling as well if appropriate ... and what would be the smallest tender dingy that I could put this engine on when I feel the need (not a high priority!)? I have a 6ft tender dingy at the moment ...
I was not bothered about this when I got the boat 2 weeks ago but having been out a couple of times fishing the 'will it start' thought has crossed my mind with no specific reason to suggest that it wont !!
I have been advised locally that a 9.9 hp (@39kg) is minimum and that a 15hp (@51kg) won 't make much difference above that. What else is there to consider and is this a reasonable/realistic thing to do?
