Hi
I need to buy a backup outboard for a Oyster 16ft motor boat. How do I calculate which outboard to buy such as power and weight etc. I could not find any articles on buying outboards.
Thanks
Rob

Hello,

I used to use a 2 stroke Mercury 2.2hp on the back of a Leisure 17. It performed well enough although in strong tides I would have prefered a little more grunt like the 3.3HP. You

Rob we had a 3.3 Mariner 2 stroke on our Oyster 16.

It was light enough to manhandle between our tender and the Oysters auxilliary bracket too

All good advice.

What you need though is THRUST not Power (don't get confused between the two).

Therefore look for a 2.5 / 3.3 which is light - or if you can live with the weight, and can find one, look for a 5hp sailpower engine which will give more thrust per kg of weight that anything else, and will give an excellent performance as an auxiliary
