I need some new ones, duno how big, just sort of right size for a 35ft boat with about 12.6 beam and two 200hp Volvo splutters in it. The ones there are about ten inches long, two of them. But the dials say zerro. Insurance says I have to have them.

Personally I have had far more problems with sinking than setting on fire. But what and where do I get the extingushers I need.

You need to work out the volume. Sea Fire(?) I think, has a website where it tells you what to include and what to deduct and which model of extinguisher to use for the relevant volume.

I do believe the people who supply require that you measure the engine room length width and depth from this they work out the cubic metres and hey presto they know which sizes to fit.

Don't go for a complicated system then ...

Bottle in engine room, and tubing (like pulling a cable) around where fire is likely to start... nothing else. They will give you a bottle with the tubing connected.. All you need to state is how long the tube is to be.... (4 - 8 m ?).

I think you will find that professional fire protection specialists will specify that you should have ONE extinguisher that will protect the relevant space. Theory is that if you have two there is no guarantee they will 'fire off' together which means they may not have the capacity to deal with the fire.

Just renewed ours with Fire Protection Online Ltd

Got 2 1k powder extinguishers @ £17.47 each Pt No XFPP1
and 1 10kg autonmatic extinguisher (suitable for boat use) @ £57.97 - Pt No XAPS10

Delivery was a further £8.97

Including Vat the bill was £117.16 - I thought that was dirt cheap /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The heaters been on fire today, so I'm told. ££££££.

Kwackers and a proper mechanic are working on the water leak from this afternoon. So they may be there. Dont think we will.

I have heard that powder does nasty things to ones engine if they go off whilst the engine is running.

I've bitten the bullit and bought a gas one for £438 quid.

I reconed that if a powder one did go off for no reason. It would cost that to clean up after, even if the engines were not running.

My current engine bay extinguisher may, or may not, be halon /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif. I've reluctantly decided that it will have to be changed shortly and that, when I do so, I will go the expensive "halon replacement" route, for very much the same reasons as you.

But powder would be better than nowt.
