Ok the big day is comin... Shady goes in the water....after the bank manager has invested a significant amount in her.

So to avoid rather large sand banks in the entrance & in the channel of the EXE, I understand that
at 003 24.200 w you can go over the outer sand bank due north and come to the main channel at no 8 marker buoy, thus avoiding the problems at no 5 & 6 markers in the main channel & at the entrance, can anyone familiar with the area confirm? Also what state of tide?

thanks

You haven't said what your draught is so it all depends!

I can go right across Pole Sand at HW +/- 2hours, but I've got a lifting keel.

I've never had a problem at Buoys 5 & 6 though I've bounced along the bottom at low springs! Personally I wouldn't use your short cut towards low water, but I would cut across the sand banks a little to the East of where you say. (It's quite clear on the chart)

Your best bet is to do the trip a few times when there's plenty of water around and keep an eye on your depth gauge. Early each season I usually go along the fairway at half tide and use the Mk1 eyeball to get the lie of the land.

When you enter the Exe make sure at "The Bight" that you don't go straight between Buoys 13 & 15. Swing out, away from the sand banks, otherwise you'll go "bump"!

Where will you be moored?

Don't know the lat and long but wot you say seems about right BUT if it was me making my first entrance I would make for the Fairway buoy at about HW -2 and follow the buoys up the channel.

With that much keel I'ld second Longjohnsilvers comments. I suspect that if you've got enough water to get over the sand banks on the course you were suggesting then you'll have more than enough water to get over the bar!

I've also sent you a PM.

There is a channel there but it shifts. I draw about the same as you and would agree with LJS. Don't cut 2 buoy too much - used to be able to but the bank seems to have extended to the east. Favour the starboard side of the channel between 3 and 5 buoys and keep well clear of 10 buoy - it used to mark the end of a spit but seems to be on it now. Keep an eye on your echo sounder!
Good luck!

Just seen your post so could be a little late in giving you this info. I ahve PM'd you with further details. I have 5'6'' draft yacht at starcross. You do not state were you are being launched? Are you going in at Teinmouth? This is important as your arrival at the Exe will be delayed due to the time it takes the launching there. You may be better to get a temp mooring for the night from the HM and leave with out going tide to arrive at the Exe at HW.
Anyway, at HW I come in at number 2 and I have at springs come between 6 & 7 with 6 port close to starboard and a diagnal line to 7. I do not attempt the western approaches at any time. this is for shoal draft and bilge keelers only. I stay in the middle of the channel bouys until 7 and keep 9 & 11 close to starboard alsoI keep over to starboard on a bearing in line with the prominent building next to Exmouth docks. This keeps me to starboard of the 10 porthand bouy. I stay quite close Exmouth turing to port just before the Dock entrance, into the channel towards the bight keeping a line direct towards starboard bouy 13. This is the most important area for you to be concerned! If you follow the line to the next Starboard bouy you could go aground. It is important that you take a diagonal track from 13 to the large yellow visitors moorings which you will see clearly. Even if there is busy traffic attempting to keep you over to the right stay on your course. they have plenty of deep water to keep outside of you. (most sailors are aware of this anyway but beware of the Exmouth Ferry who doesn't care about anyone other than himself) Once you are passing alongside the yellow moorings you can follow the line of the privately moored boats which are all in deep water. You can stay on this track up to the north of Starcross pier keeping inside the line of boats and the the port 16 bouy.
I am a member of the SFCC at starcross. Please call the club if you need any further information or read my PM.

Regards.

Peter.
