Staff at the scene blamed a 'mechanical failure' for the mishap, which saw the lorry roll backwards over the edge of the Bourne End Marina in Slough, Buckinghamshire. Luckily, it was saved from plunging into the water by a small tug boat, which is now 'probably a write off'

Nearly as good as the harbour staff in Ramsgit who failed to apply the hand brake and got out... It rolled over the edge and onto the pontoon...
There was a photo in the Thanet Times ... but before tinternet days so no easy view...

I was a passenger in a coach once, doing a 99 point turn in a very small space, and his brakes failed and he ended up crunching into some bollards.

I was staggered to learn that the air brakes on coaches require air to stop, and excessive use of the brakes has used up the air faster than it could be replenished. I really would have thought it would be fail safe, with air needed to keep the brakes off.

I wonder if that's what happened here?

modern stuff uses air to keep the brakes off. Loss of air pressure locks on the brakes.

In a similar vein handbrakes used to be manual. Most now dump the air out of sections of the system locking the brakes on.
