Hi all

I was wondering if any of you who have had young babies (3 months onwards) have any tips for safety and making life comfortable?

Baby #2 is due in 4 days and I suspect that we'll give the first 2/3 months a miss?

Thanks for your comments.

Cheers.

We have sailed and crusied with babies loads !

The secrect is to keep the mum at ease ! So have lots of spares on board ! you never know, and if the babies are happy the mnum is happy ! Plan really easy passages other wise it will be the last trip. make sure babies have places to roll about and do the things the are used to do, also the rocking motion will keep them happy !

How many babies are in a load? And how many spares do you keep? In case you lose a few overboard?

Well, Been there, done that thing, twice.

1. Practice sailing singlehanded, first.

2. Be sure you can secure the cot in place.

3. It is a myth that babies don't gets seasick. They can go from suck to blow in an instant!

4. You will not be seeing a lot of Mum whilst on passage. In fact, expect to see nothing at all, and you won't be disappointed.

5. Crewsaver sell a baby floatation cot for the under - ones. We were so staggered by the price that we decided that, "in the unlikely event of an accident," as the airlines put it, we would let him drown and make a new one instead.

We liveaboard with our 2 kids, ages 2 1/2 and 4. When they are babies, I have to admit, it's pretty easy compared to when they can run around. When sailing we would tie up a carseat in the cockpit and they were pretty happy. We didn't do any extreme sailing. We always took it easy. When our son started walking, we purchased his life jacket and he wasn't allowed to go on deck or on docks without it. We also put netting around the lifelines, which is really nice. The kids can play on deck without too many worries. We moved off for a year when our daughter (the youngest) was 8 months old, to do some work on the boat. We've been back on for almost a year. So we didn't do much sailing when they were babies. We took a month long trip when our son was 15 months and I was pregnant with our daughter. Everything worked out great. You have to watch what you leave on deck at that age. We were retrieving many things along the way and he actually threw all of his pacifiers overboard. It was a great way to ween him. If you have any specific questions, please let me know. I absolutely love living aboard and am extremely happy we are bring our kids up in this lifestyle. Best of luck. Congratulations on Baby #2. How far apart are they?

Take Care,

Angela

Ah, yes, the satisfaction of "tidying up the deck and hearing something make a nice splash!"

We don't have lifelines - we actually took them off because we were fed up with the leaks the stanchions caused - so we have a rule about safety harnesses on deck.
