Having 'slagged orf' the Homebase chain of stores in 'another place', I have an appointment tomorrow pm with the B&Q DIY barn in Brizl, instead.

Now, I know the B&Q lot are goodgyz, because they sponsor our Lady Ellen Mac, and that's 'a good thing'. But is that good enough reason for me to subsidise her mooring fees in France by my impending purchase of some wall tiles and loft insulation?

Should I find a struggling local trader - such as Focus - instead? And ask them for more discount?

Re: B&Q

OTOH I am rather p'd off with B&Q at the moment. I have a set of B&Q wall lights and broke the glass shade of one. No problem thinks I, just go back to the store and order a new one and a spare. Firstly I walked round looking for the Customer Service desk, finally asking an employee where it was - "We don't have one". Next question - who do we see about spares - "Speak to xxx in Lighting". Not a single member of staff in Lighting. Eventually we determined that they are made in China and there are no spares. Buy a whole light just for the shade or scrap the lot and buy something else. Grrr.

I prefer Wickes for proper stuff like tiles etc. Better lay-out, better staff, better prices. Not as much gaudy stuff, but probably better range of tiles. Or if you're just after white dimple tiles, a shed-load cheaper.

Mind you, up here most big sheds are a trip, usually in opposite directions, so buying at the local (Wolsey) builder's merchant is sometimes more cost-effective.

B&Q - Hm!. About a month ago I selected a packet of drill bits (£38) and when I got to the checkout it was discovered that several bits were missing/stolen. It was the last on the shelf. Each week I go in to find the same half-empty tin sitting on the shelf with no new bits in store. Annoying or what.

ok a discount, no point if the bit size you want is missing /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

oh and thanks for reminding me, ive got a credit note and an item to send back for returns, should be able to get a packet of plated brass hinges for the boat, should last years. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Sellotaped up and back on the shelves for some unsuspecting customer to buy.

Overpriced cheap crap imo-think quick makeover or throwaway tools...or easy convenient pricing and wonderful background music whilst you ponder the stacks of boxes...
What you want is a quality local specialist(tiles, tools, timber etc.Use 'em or lose 'em.

Earlier in the year I bought a Stanley 3/8 drive socket set at MachineMart for just over £17. Shortly after I saw the identical set on sale in B&Q at £42!!!!!

Its my preference to use smaller local people where feasable, not only puts something into the local community which is a verry valued thing but if things do go pear shaped easier to get closer to by holdin out a freindly hand and gently drawing them closer " bi't throat" if an amecable solution is not forthcomming.

I bought a handle with an open hacksaw blade from B&Q specifically to cut a hole and install my NASA Clipper Duet. The blade was so poor it shattered instantly and IMHO was a dangerous tool as it could easily have caused injury and I wasn't abusing it.

From a professional standpoint I'm not impressed with the brands of Central heating boiler they stock. A significant number of the knackered ones we pull out are the ones they are selling. There is much better out there for not too much more money.

Having had my moan I now contradict myself by saying that overall I'm a B&Q fan...me Fickle??

Here in Boston we had a wonderful old fashioned hardware shop called Armes which I used whenever I could. The couple who ran it retired two years ago and the shop closed. A great shame.

There's a similar type store over in Stamford , not far from the Millstone pub , but nothing here in Spalding that I know of , maybe an opening for someone ??

....and I have a Focus promotion leaflet offering another -15% on a range of goods I'm willing to buy, until mid-November.

Someone else can sponsor La Petite Anglaise - I'm sorting out our kitchen and loft space......

I walked out of B & Q twice recently because they only had three tills open and queues miles long. Fortunately the Guildford branch has a Homebase next door.

I hope someone at B & Q reads this.
