Having lost a screwdriver over the side (makes a sweet little 'plop' as it disappears for ever!) I bought a set of 6, cross and flat head, own brand in a pack from B&Q with hole in the top through which a shortish lanyard can be passed and then around the wrist to prevent this happening again. £8.98.

Also bought a 30m length of 6mm polypropelene braid in a nice blue with red dashes for £11.88, useful for lashings, fenders, etc etc.

Elastic handy ties, all shapes, variety and sizes - hefty ones I bought - £2.14, neat little looping single clips - .99p

Cable ties for securing shackle ends that might vibrate loose - pack to last a couple of seasons for .99p

Self adhesive feltpads in a variety of shapes and sizes - for those who have the floating floor boards that wobble and creak, and also doors or wooden items that need some 'banging protection' - £2.99

Probably loads more given the time to look:))

They do sheets of perspex/acrylic which you can cut up to protect salon tables. Also chairs and tables which are so cheap that they don't warrant cleaning. Also solar powered night lights. last but not least, large flagstones, useful to secretly load up jimis boat shortly before he goes for a race.

..and plastic pipes for Danbuoys. Got the guard rail rests as standard with mine.

Did buy at the week-end, some 8mm shroud protectors, excellent protection for gib sheets which on my boat spend alot of time against shrouds.

Saw the polishers everyone is raving about for £15, just wonder what happens if I drop it in accidentally?:))

Best stuff is that non slip criss cross stuff. I've cut it to fit the saloon table, chart table and have put it under the cushions in the saloon, much better than velcro. I can really seriously recommend it. £4.95 a roll (think it was actually Homebase though)

I'll add to the basket... velcro straps in various colours and lengths (for luggage)which make sail-ties, much safer than shock-cord and bobbles which'll take your eye out. I have attached mine to the boom so I know where they are.

Bits of pipe, square section for winch handle holders, round for holding deck-brush and fishing rods. Hose for warp anti-chafe.

The screws are useless, though.

Bargain or rip-off?

To my surprise, I've found my local yacht chandler (Sharp & Enwright in Dover) is actually cheaper than B&Q on virtually all the comparable small DIY items I've needed for a major refit. This includes: paint-brushes, drill-bits, emery paper, sanding disks, white-spirit, varnish, cable grips, light line, hand tools, and non-specialist paints.

For example, a one-use 1" paint-brush: chandler 28p, B&Q 99p. Frankly, given their volume, B&Q is a rip-off.

Re: Clear plastic sheet

Any idea where I might get some heavy duty non flexible sheet about 1/2 inch thick. I want to make a clear one piece cover to replace the 2 piece washboards (which are a pain for getting in and out) for the times when we are week-ending but the weather is inclement. Also lets lots of light in.

Velcro straps

They sell wide velcro straps with fixing plates under a trade name something like "Teesa". These are very useful for securing large fire extinguishers and probaly all sorts of other kit too.

Re: More B&Q bargains

I agree re B&Q bargains, I bought a ladder from them a month ago, folds in 4 sections, so can be a step ladder, standard 11ft ladder and a platform, best of all it folds down so it can go in the boot of my VW Bora, great buy for £47.00.

However I notice that in one of the catolgues which came with the latest PBO it was being advertised for £99.

Yet more evidence on marine industry ripping us off!!!

Watch the cable ties, some go very brittle in sunlight and shatter with the slightest knock!

My local Woolies had a sale last week and I found a neat small alarm system for £7.49 with contacts to fit the washboard. The siren when tested was hellish loud in the cabin and enough to scare any pilferer (I hope!).

Well done

B & Q or Woollies it doesn't matter, as long as we support 'em while they support our Ellen in her latest 75ft Tri-maran solo round the world effort:))

Think I'll get one of these alarms for the cabin door, far more effective than vaseline for keeping the kids out.
Edited by david_e on 02/04/2003 09:18 (server time).

Re: Clear plastic sheet

I used the clear acrlyic, approx 3mm, and made a single frame to the thickness of the existing doors out of the strips of mahogany that are generally available at most diy stores.

Looks good, nice and light to handle, strong, lets in plenty of light. Only use them when we are on the boat for security reasons.

Just be careful handling and cutting the acrlyic sheet as its a bit brittle.

Cheers

Re: Clear plastic sheet

1/2" acrylic isn't a stock item at most plastic suppliers. It's also exceedingly expensive. It may be cheaper to get 12mm float glass toughened than buy the acrylic (yes, it's that expensive).

Regards

Richard

why not try screwfix which i am told is the mail order side of b&q. same items as already mentioned yet even cheaper and if the order is over £40ish, delivered free. placed my last order 5.30pm on a monday night and it was delivered to my door at 11am the following morning. they even supply yacht varnish & anti fouling now but i'm not suure what the quality is like
