B & Q and Tescos copies in Malta??

Can the boys/girls who know Malta tell me if there are some, (or one), superstores like B & Q for hardware stuff, (and a Maplins), and Tescos/Aldi for foodtuff etc..

I just need a names and location - I can travel as I've got a car for the week, and nowhere is more than 17 miles away /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Tried Yellow Pages, but it doesnt give a flavour of size or content.

Bit of a long shot this Richard as it's a while since I wintered in Malta. From Sliema Marina I used to walk along past Manoel Island bridge, along the seafront and off to the left up the hill behind the seafront shops is a big supermarket, the name escapes me, but if you're driving you could stop off at Sliema Marina as someone there will know what it's called and which street it's in. I remember too there was a branch of Marks and Spencers also along that same stretch of seafront, as you head towards St Julians Bay. Puff will be on in the morning to rescue you and tell me my memorys gone completely awol.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
 
I know M & S, and BHS, (SWMBO made me go there when my clothes were hanging off me after an active summer in the sun /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Look forward to hearing from Puff and one or two others in the morning.

For a 'better' supermarket with a good variety of stuff you are used to try the Arcadia, below the Hilton (in St Julians I think - but its next to the big tower you can see from everywhere). Go into the underground car park and find the Arcadia car park (down 2 levels I think). If the proper entryway to the Arcadia area barrier won't go up, go in the exit - it will. Get a token for your parking and get your ticket endorsed at the checkout for free parking.

Note: you have 2 hours parking so if you're going for afternoon tea at the Hilton, go there first. (1 tea between 2 - they're big).

For hardware, I prefer the proper hardware stores of which there are hundreds. Very helpful and relatively cheap too.

I'm in Portomaso Marina and have a top up card for the car park - so it was Arkadia that I was trying to improve on /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks for the advice on the afternoon tea - I'll give it a go when Janet next comes.

OK, here goes:

Hardware stores:
As has been said, there are literally hundreds and quite often it is a case of 'what you don't see, ask for'. Prices are, naturally, less than chandlers. Do not ask for 'hardware store'; people will understand you better if you say 'ironmonger'. Past Manoel Island bridge, going towards Valletta, there is Gauci Borda - good for boat hardware, paints, rope, etc but not so hot for electrics. For electronics there is Medcomms (Garmin, Furuno, Simrad, and similar). Further up there is a small shop that specialises in electronic stuff down to component level. The name escapes me but it is practically next door to Nautica and are the agents for Yaesu. In the street parallel to them, opposite the garden and the seafront there is Camilleri Marine (right behind Medcomms). Although they are chandlers, they do have quite a good selection of electric components like switches, panels, through-deck glands, and suchlike on the shelves in the middle of the store. Again, ask the lady; she is very helpful.

Food:
Up the road from Medcomms, around 200 metres, there is a supermarket called Gala which is quite well supplied. Many liveaboards at the Ta Xbiex Marina find it convenient. My favourite is the Park Towers chain. Prices are very good as is the quality. I go to the branch in Psaila Street, Santa Venera, close to St Philip Hospital. Another excellent one is 'GS' just outside Naxxar if you are driving up from St Julians. Of course there are the Lidl outlets, if you care for that sort of thing. Personally, I find them shoddy. They do have good prices for low-end drinks though. Their brands of German beer are rock bottom prices (but too sweet for my palate).

Hi Richard, if you are on the bus go as normal no 52/63 to Valetta terminus.Then No 8 I think, to Hamrum, and ask folks for Pavi supermarket near the racecourse. Check all this with locals. The Pavi supermarket is an import of one of the French chains, Auchan or Carrefour. Good supplies.Drinks cheaper there and good choice of food.Hope this helps.Good sailing to all!
 
There is one B & Q copy type place. It is called Homemate. It is between Hamrum and Attard. Not easy to find the first time but just ask along the way as most people know where it is.

Arcadia, is probably the best quality on the islan but also quite pricey. Gala is not the best but convenient for Msida marina. People swear by Smart but I don't. I think the best bet after Arcadia is Scotts in Sliema. You tend to get quiet a bit of Britsh produced frozen stuff, pies, sausages etc etc if you hanker after that sort of thing.

Found HomeMate today, just behind Associated Motors where I got my Honda Genny in 2007, and where my outboard is being serviced - plenty of tools and stuff, so that's handy.

Got a switch from the nice lady at Camilleri yesterday, and going to get some Sikaflex from White Sails tomorrow or Thursday.

what a great/strange shop. Upstairs to the little sales room where he's got tons of electronic "things" tacked to wall boards. Excellent for anything electronic
