Our B & G Network wind anemometer has stopped spinning over the winter months.

Haven't been up to look yet and boat is some distance away so was looking
for possible ideas of what might be wrong with it.

Corroded bearings comes to mind but is this likely and can they be replaced?
Doesn't look bent or have anything jamming it.

Whilst I don't know the B&G unit, most marine anemometers use small standard sized stainless ball races. On my old VDO units the size is 3mm bore, 8mm OD x 4mm thick, and a pair can be bought off E-bay very cheaply. (like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3x8x4-mm...hash=item3f50bf2104:m:m_bv3PhM1_GgC7vzDbqBp-w)
Any anemometer will stop if dirt gets into the bearings, and for that reason they should not be oiled, its far better to run them dry and replace when worn. The last time one of my mast head units stopped spinning it was not the bearings, either hail stones or a bird had broken one of the cups off.

Just about to change my B&G one for a new Raymarine one. Do you want mine, it spins beautifully, works a treat but won't link into the new seatalk stuff so has to go. 1989 vintage.

Its always worth having two, that way if a wind cup breaks its only one trip up the mast to do a swap, not two trips to take it down, repair it then go back up again.

Not so long ago, my mate would have been pleading to buy that for a three figure sum.
If the elctronics in them stop working, they are expensive to get fixed.

Try a forum search. There was a post on how to replace the cassette on a B&G anemometer or just renew the bearings. Short on time I bought a replacement cassette from B&G Service. It was easy to fit. I think AT&T also supply yhem

I don't know which model you have but there was a long thread with photos a few years back about replacing the bearings. I followed it successfully. The difficult bit is unscrewing the cassette as corrosion can cause the threads to bind up.
