I have worked out that I could have all analogue instruments on deck on my new boat eg depth, speed, wind angle, wind speed etc. They look very pretty but I am nervous about the depth one. I have got so used to a digital display showing 3.2 or 2.1 that I think that little needle on the depth would not give me the same accuarcy. I do realise that sometimes it doesn't matter to be that accurate but when I look at the display head for depth it looks like it would say either 1m or 5m. Anyone got any experience of analogues ?

I prefer analogue instrunents (it must be an age thing). I particularly hate those digital displays that give you information down to a hundredth of a part and are always changing. If you need to know whether the bottom is two meters away or 1.9, I suggest you're too far inshore anyway. As for speed, does it really matter if you're doing six knots or 5.9?

You can glance at an analogue instrument and get a fair idea of the situation without need ing to know precisely what it is. I've analogue speed and rev meters on my bike and intuitively know where the needles should be for gear changes and critical speeds (30, 40, 50 &70) so I don't need to read a series of numbers.

I've got B&G analogues on my boat so beware the srevice costs though, i know of wot I speak.

Yup I agree with TC, B&G are very nice instruments but I replaced all my B&G gear with Nasa kit for slightly more than half of the refurb cost of the B&G instruments.
Ok the wiring was a sod but I replaced all the old wires as part of a rewire of the boat.
