The Peters Opal fiasco seems to be another example, like Farepak, of companies misusing money from clients. Why is there no law to prevent this? Is it not basically fraud?
I have sense that the forum is skating on thin ice here.
I know nothing of the Peters Opal saga, other than what I have read here.
Before the rumour mill grinds the reputation of anyone concerned with the former management into very small pieces, do we have any VERIFIED details that people who have paid money as deposit or final payment on boats have been told they have lost their money, or that any client account funds have been used improperly to support the business ?
I cannot see how this kind of information is going to become public domain information unless it is from someone who has been told that boat purchase cash has been lost, or it is from the administrators themselves.
Until then are we not dealing in unsubstantiated rumours, with all the risks that stem from putting them on the forum ?
If there has been chicanery by the previous chairman or by underlings, the details will come out in due course, and be dealt with appropriately. If the administrators are to be believed, there are buyers waiting to take the business over, and any reputable purchaser will keep faith with people who have paid money for boats; it's a matter of building and maintaining a business reputation, and that's a pre-requisite for any such business in the current market.
Till then, I respectfully suggest that personal allegations, even in the informal and fervent environment of the forum, are of a restrained and non-hypothetical nature
Please don't succumb to the oh! so British habit of delighting when somebody successful is brought down. You should all be above such sentiments. On this theme, imagine the mediafest if Sir Richard Branson's businesses all failed!!
Brian Peters has run an extremely successful company, and was a friend of my Sister-in-law, and Brother-in-law who is sadly now dead, and they thought highly of him. I have never met him, so do not have any opinions.
I look forward to the BMF's statement of support (and cash?) for those who have lost out in boat purcheses or sales because of the situation with Peters Opal.
Angela seems pretty certain she's lost a lot of money, but I take your point. Still, it wouldn't kill the BMF to put out a statement of support for the customers that keep their members in business instead of trying to ignore the situation and hang onto their new chairman....

Not quite sure where to start here Becky:
I dont think anyone is delighted... it is just a bit galling that someone makes a lot of money for themselves, and gets an OBE on the back of a business which obviously wasnt being run properly. The British way is actually that people with lots of money receive priviledges, (sp?), and dont often suffer like those with less money, when something like this happens.
Furthermore, nobody other than Peters Opal brought Peters Opal down. Someone took their eye off the ball, (a long time ago), and didnt take the right management steps to prevent this from happening.
Of course there would be a mediafest if Richard Bransons businesses failed .... with or without this theme.
"Brian Peters has run an extremely successful company" - "into the ground" are the missing words. As chairman, the buck stops here. He appoints the board, they make the decisions, and here we are ... bust!
Not that successful in my book.
Sorry, but that's how I see it.
Oh.... I am sure he is a very nice man to have as a friend.
