How come we can only vote for the service award and not nominate the best boat award. Suppose we might upset the not very well "Hidden Agendas" ie the obvious choices every year.
What? Us mere mortal "customers" who put 100% of the dosh into the industry choose the best boats on merit rather than on who's the most important advertisers? :rolf

While I enjoy mags for coffee table use, I do realise they are just bound collections of adverts with some recycled editorial content spliced in. It's just business, and quite a good one.
We did consider having a public vote for the boats as well but unless everyone voting has sea trialled all the relevant boats, it would be hard for them to give a truly balanced overview on how one good boat compares to six or seven others in the category. There is a danger that the award would always end up going to the best selling boat rather than the best one. This isn't always the same thing. It also leaves it open to abuse from manufacturers/dealers posing as members of the public etc
I know that some of you will never believe it but these awards are decided without any regard for advertising spend in our magazines. Neither the publisher nor the advertising team have any role in the decision making process. On occasions this causes considerable upset amongst some of our biggest advertisers but we stand by our decisions because we believe they are the right ones. Look at last year's winners and you will see that some minor players won some big awards. The Nordwest 420 would not have won the best flybridge below 50ft award if it were based on advertising spend!
