Avon rubber valves

Hi all, just acquired an old Avon with the rubber valves. They're quite stiff and hard to push in, I was wondering what to use to lubricate them? Silicon grease any good? Or maybe the purple grease I used to use on brake cylinder seals years ago? - still got some in the garage. Any suggestions?

Water works quite well! And then dries out so the plugs don't pop out when you don't want them to.

Yes good point............ although they seem very secure when fully in.

Do I recall reading somewhere that Fairy attacks rubber, eg car windscreen surrounds and wiper blades??

Ouch!........... anyway I've combined the two suggestions and used some Fairy and water.. the bubbles should show up any leaks.... Cheers.
