Need to glue my rubbing strake on my avon and have bought special glue from poly marine. Its two pack and main part is in a can about the same size as a half size can of beans and the hardner in a tiny bottle. How on earth do I measure a 25:1 mix in such small quantities??? Impossible ! ! !???

Hi Steve

If it is the same as I have used "Bostik 2402" I dont think that is`s that critical, obviously the more more accelerator used the faster it goes off.

Try ringing Pollymarine for tips.

Can you not use proportions eg half the glue and half the accelerator ? I heard that the glue would go off eventually even without accelerator but have never tried it.

I get my glue ect from Eurocraft in Leyland Lancs they have been very helpfull.
They build/repair/refurbish inflatables and have just made a cracking job of refurbishing our club safety boat.

I am not connected to them in any way apart from being a very satisfied customer.

You think you're struggling!?!
I once saw TV celebrity chef Anthony Worrall-Thomson on the telly giving out a recipe that called for "a heaped tablespoon of Golden Syrup"...!
HOW DO YOU HEAP SYRUP ONTO A SPOON ?

weighing

Use small electronic scales. Works a treat. especially if you can switch to zero again with the glue already weighed and still on the scales, than add the right quantity of hardner. EG: first 50 grams of glue, then add 2 grams of hardener.

Good Luck.
Let us know how it worked. I have a tatty old Avon Redstart that needs some repairs. I have used the one-pack Bostik glue but the repairs seem not to hold for too long. Also I have heard that you should use toluene as a first treatment to soften up the Hypalon material. Where on earth would one get toluene. Highly poisonous and I don't think chemists still sell it....

Anyone knows any alternatives?

Re: weighing

I would want to check the label to be 100% sure but I think Evostik (or similar) cleaner, thinner or whatever it is called is is toluene (more correctly called methylbenzene). I'm not sure about treating the hypalon first. Do it if the instuctions with the glue say do it. It would be sensible to wipe the surfaces to be joined with some toluene though to be sure they are grease free.

It won't be available off the shelf self service because of the solvent abuse precautions, but then neither are tins of the glue.

Re the use of small electronic scales. The kitchen ones weigh in increments of 2g so may not be precise enough for the hardener. There are inexpesive scales available that do weigh in smaller increments though. Maplins do one for around the £25 mark

(Ive got an old fashioned chemical balance so no problems for me)

I think pete is right about the glue "going off" wthout the hardener and I think I have used it without.
