Avoiding Lymington

If you are picking up from my post, I did say "approaching". When you go past the docked ferry heading from the RLYC moorings towards Berthon/fuel barge, the wash from the ferry holding it in the berth is quite considerable directly across the main channel at a narrow point - I can see a significant potential for passing boats being pushed into the RLYC boats.

Thanks for the clarification - no worries with that. There is so much carp in this thread, I would hate potential visitors to be put off coming to Lymington.

Not that I have any vested interest, of course! :o

I think we should be putting them off - it's a great place, the only thing wrong with it is it sometimes gets so crowded I can't always get on the Town Quay. Must have the best/friendliest harbour team on the South Coast. Now if the council could just get the Saltwater Baths sorted for this summer...

How did your visit go to Newtown last year after all? You never did report back as to whether or not you needed your wellies to get up to Shalfleet Quay at low tide. ;)

The last time I was there was on a glorious sunshine-soft late summer evening just as England won the ashes ! Actually to be fair that wasn't the last time we were there but one which sticks in the mind ;)

Very funny Henry. But clearly the 'scatter cushions' bit is made up?

However, I too have passed close to the new ferries when leaving Lymington, just after the Berthon fuel pontoon. We had waited for the ferry to berth and then passed by.

All I can say is that I shan't do it again with such nonchalance. Our boat was pushed about 3 metres sideways which took me by surprise, and whilst I quickly regained control and kept away from the yachts tied to river moorings, it would have been easy to clip one of them.

So, new strategy? If we are passing by the ferries whilst they still have their engines pinning them to the dock, I almost aim for the side of the ferry to negate the effect of the thrusters. However,if he switches his engines off suddenly, I think that I shall have a long red line down the side of my boat!

But anyway my point is I don't care if he has any right to be there or not, but if you go near them when they are moving or holding they will surprise you!

Cheers

Garold
