Could anyone provide details of how to fit an auxiliary engine transom bracket?
I do have an inboard but I just want to air on the side of caution / safety when sailing with my family.
Thanks once again for any and all god advice / pointers.

G'day Old_Glow_In_The_Deeps,

Depends on what type of bracket you have, some are a simple track the outboard is mounted on that can be lowered to the required depth. others rely on a spring loaded mounting that pivots out and down, this type has very little adjustment though.

Also consider storage when not in use and how easy or difficult it may be to remove the outboard for stowage as well just clearing the water.

Hopefully your bracket has adjustment to vary the height of the motor.
If not the height /depth is critical.
Too deep and the motor is hard to reach for repairs and for starting.
Too deep can also be susceptible to swamping but from my experience this is not as much of problem as you might imagine.
Also it is nice to be able to swing motor out of the water unless you store it inside.
Too shallow and it will lift out of the water on swell losing drive and cavitating/over revving, especially if someone is on the bow or trim is not stern down.
Obviously for access and starting a long shaft motor is far better.

So this is why you need an adjustable bracket. However if the boat is big/heavy and does not vary its trim with people movement then set the bracket for the cavitation plate about 6inches below water level. (yes I realise on a RIB it should be at water level but this is different) good luck olewill

I did exactly the same thing earlier this year. I always carry the tender outboard 4Hp though when I got a problem with the inboard diesel I had to pump up the tender and tie it alongside to enter harbour (in a rough sea this would be next to impossible) as without some one in the tender it tries to flip onto it`s back.
With my Hunter 27 the transom slopes forward so an adjustable rake bracket is a must I tried it on the last trip and in calm seas it pushed me along at 4Kt .
Because it is a short shaft motor I had to position the bracket quite low but because when motoring the stern is at its lowest it was fine.
I appreciate that in wild weather it may not be as usable but hopefully I would be sailing so that don`t matter.

It has adjustable height and the motor also tilts so it is well clear of the water when not in use. but in normal situations the motor will still live on the pushpit rail.
Its never going to be as good as your inboard but it is a usable backup .

Have a look at learigg. I think she might be moored about 10' from your boat if I'm guessing correctly. The bracket works a treat and pushes us along at 4 knts with a 4hp motor. Its also adjustable so that the motor sits higher when not in use.

Also as said previously if the worst comes to the worst then you can maybe use the sails /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

On Jissel (Snapdragon 24) I use one of these
LWL019.jpg-450.jpg

There's a tapered wooden block between the bracket & transom to hold it straight vertically and horizontally which required a bit of thought and calculation.

I put the dinghy OB (Tohatsu 3.5 short shaft) on it and it works fine on smooth water - 4kts at about 3/4 throttle, When things get bumpy, it isn't really deep enough but, even so, it's a useful get out of jail free card if the donk decides it doesn't want to play.

Thank you all for your help in this matter. I have today just bought a 6hp 2 stroke Yamaha long shaft, twin cylinder.
Bracket and the fitting of next.
