Has anyone any experience of these vane steering gears. I would like to know how effective they are on Vancouver 27/28 compared with say Monitor, Schwing or Aires gears.
I'd really like an answer to this as well. I've spoken to three people with trimtabs (one V32, one V28, and a Contessa 26) Only one was an Autosteer (on the V28 and he took it off when he bought the boat 'cos "it made the steering heavy") The others liked them. The Schwing is highly recommended by Russalka Mist and there's a good description on the web site. A V27 I know had an Aries fitted and he loved it but I thought it looked an abortion.
I've an enqiry in the Vancouver owners news but have not had any replies, apart from a recommendation for the Schwing from Kevin Seymour.
I was looking at a Autosteer trim tab for a Vancouver 28 but was advised against it by a couple of people I spoke to from the Vancouvers Owners Club. It seems pretty neat but people don't seem to rate it.
I ended up getting a second hand Schwing and buying some new bits from Schwing to restore it - about £700 all together. The Schwing works really well and as it mounts on the push pit can be removed during the season without leaving any holes in the hull. I put an advert in Practical Boat Owner asking for second hand ones and got approached by a couple of people so there are a few around.
