The mechanical part of the Robertsons autopilot on my Fairline Turbo 36 returns the message "Rudder response failure". I can hear the motor on the hydraulic pump working when I activate the autopilot but the rudders do not move although the power steering does work okay. Does anyone know what might be causing the problem?

Does your display indicate faults with code numbers i.e. F67, and then your refer to manual to find out what it is? If so yours is as old as ours, and we find that by switching off and then back on again the system kicks in and is fine, have got book on boat but from memory the indicator at start up reads 888 then if it is going to work it indicates the chosen course, or sometimes we get f67 or f88 cannot remember the indicated faults but as I say switch off and on sorts it. Also get yourself on a steady course before engaging.

Thanks for the interesting reply but I don't get numbers up on the display, just the words indicated

Yours must be a later model, therefore do as we do i.e.off and back on also check the rudder sensor, should be found on or around the tiller bar or steering ram. Black box with actuating arm balljointed to the steering, sometimes these break as the arm at least on ours is made from an alloy which does not take kindly to salt water, will consult operators manual when next down on our boat.
