I have an ST1000 autopilot and am planning on interfacing this with my Garmin 12 and NASA repeater and was wondering if this was worth doing?
Our should i keep the autopilot as it is.

My Navico is interfaced with my Garmin 120XL and I wouldn't be without it. It can lock onto the home fairway buoy and get there whatever the tidal strength and direction. At times we appear to be pointing 20 degrees off but we have learnt to trust the GPS and not our eyes. It is also a boon on long stretches particularly in poor weather on the engine.

I think that you will need a converter from Raymarine in the circuit to convert the signal from NMEA to Sea-Talk. That is unless it is the latest Autohelm 1000ST which can take NMEA signals.

It is about £130!!!

its easy to do, just run two wires from pins five and six on the autopilot socket to the gps, you will need to change the settings on the garmin to nmea and thats about it,
it does say how to do this in the manual of the st1000 but if you dont have that its on their website !

Have used both methods suggested here and they work well. I ended up using the Raymarine converter box to integrate Garmin fixed /handheld backup with Raymarine instrumentation and their PC software (Raytech 4.1).
Agree with comments on the usefulness. It's sometimes like an extra crew when we're short handed.

It depends on what model of AH1000 you have.

The older 1000 can only be connected to a remote control or windvane.

The newer ST1000 can be connected to a GPS via an Interface - not cheap.

The much newer ST1000+ can be connected to the GPS by eithe the Interface or with NMEA.

Older 1000 has four pins, ST1000 has three pins, and I think the ST1000+ has 6 pins. (Perhaps someone can confirm number of pins on the + model.)

There is yet another older 1000 that can only be connected to a string feedback windvane, and an even older 1000 that has a separate compass unit.

Anything further back than that???

Yes, it has 6 pins but, I think, only uses 5 of them.

The full manual with all info, wiring details, etc. you could possibly need, is available at : http://www.raymarine.com/

The manuals for older models are also available on the Raymarine site.

A bit late, but maybe of use to someone.

This is what raymarine's web site Q&A has to say:
All of the current autopilots except the ST3000 are directly NMEA compatible. The autopilot has a NMEA IN+ and a NMEA IN- . The Garmin unit has both a NMEA Out and NMEA In cables. The Garmin's NMEA Out should be connected to our NMEA IN+. Garmin's NMEA In is not used as it is not recieving any information from the autopilot. This NMEA In wire should be taped back and insulated. They use their 12V- as the data ground so our (Raymarine's) NMEA IN- should be run to battery ground.

Also, most Garmin units have a configurable NMEA Output. Make sure that it is set to 4800 baud, NMEA/NMEA (sending out NMEA) and NMEA 0183 Version 1.5 or 2.0.

Now why didn't the handbook mention that?
