I am thinking of installing one & would ask the panel for their assistance.

Firstly, does the existing hydraulic cylinder remain in place with an additional one controlled by the autop., or does a new one replace it?

Secondly, which a/p would you recommend for a 10 tonne displacement [i.e. non-planing] boat?

Hopeful thanks,

John G

If you mean the steering ram then yes the same one is used and an electric pump controlled by the AP fitted in the lines between the helm pump and ram. I recently fitted a Raymarine outfit, mainly because I already have RM kit so it was easier to interface but have found it excellent and it was simple to fit and calibrate.

I agree with David2452, I've fitted dozens of Raymarine pilots and they are good quality kit and easy to install and setup.
Is your Linssen a steel boat as this will make the placing of the compass a bit more tricky, it will have to be above deck to get away from the steel hull.
The determining factor is how many cc's volume is your existing steering cylinder, up to 230cc you will need the SPX10 over 230cc the SPX30. These systems have rate gyros as standard which makes the pilot much more accurate in operation.

People will think you’re a rubbish driver when they see you going round and round in circles for a bit and then weaving about at random all over the shop during the setup though.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your help. A point of interest [?] might be that I read on a steel boat site that it is better to situate the compass low down inside the engine bay! alternatively I believe it may be possible to obtain a gyro compass constructed electronically i.e. not in the conventional manner.

Any comments?

This is what Raymarine have to say about it.

"Fluxgate Compass
The fluxgate compass module houses a state-of-the-art electronic compass mechanism, capable of tracking your boat's heading with incredible accuracy. The mechanism is gimballed, enabling it to handle pitch and roll movements up to +/-35o. The fluxgate compass connects directly to the course computer. It mounts on a bulkhead below decks on most boats; if yours is a steel-decked boat, the compass will be mounted above decks, out of the reach of magnetic interference."
