A quick and easy one: Are there any problems taking automatic lifejackets onto aircraft? Norway to the Med. Handbaggage, in with the rest, or special baggage? Or does it vary from carrier to carrier?
Thanks folks...

Ok, thanks! That was what I feared, was hoping for an answer along the lines of "Its fine, no problem!" /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There have been many threads on the subject and I've yet to see a clear answer emerge. I've carried a personal LJ by air all over the world without problems, but not in recent years

Believe the last hanging for carrying a CO2 bottle was Singapore 96 - but he was also chewing gum so asked for it really

Be prepared to remove the cylinders from the jackets and put in hand luggage, with the jackets in the case.

Ask at check in!

We have flown with a number of carriers, an there is no rhyme or reason to airlines, as you tend to get a different answer everytime. Sometimes we have been told to put all in the suitcase, and have done so a number of times!

One option may be to take the cylinder out of the jackets and put everything in the case and not say anything!

Have done this a couple of times.

We have been stopped from taking the canister on board an aircraft (UK to France) and the argument that every seat had one of these under it cut no ice with the baggage handlers, who would only relent if we emptied the canisters first!! TRULY!!!

I took this up after the event and someone posted here as well.

As I understand it the CAA are happy for up to 2 canisters (?per person?) but you would be well advised to get this pre-cleared before you arrive because the baggage handlers don't seem to have the rules handy and it's too late when you're stood in front of a beligerent 'Jobsworth' and the aircraft is waiting to go!

Best of luck

Visit the website of the airline that you'll be using and see what they say. Visit also the website of the airport.
Print out the relevant bits and have them handy with you. I say this because quite often the airline has no objection but the ground handlers might have other ideas.

In general you may carry manual jackets with no problem in the hold. However, some airlines draw the line at automatics, and this is understandable / debatable. This is because the hold is an extremely cold place during a flight and if there is an amount of condensation it might set off ordinary automatics.

I have no idea as to the situation with Hammar type jackets as these rely on positive pressure and not on a soluble pellet.

My daughter was stopped by ground handlers at an airport in England before a flight to Malta last July because she was bringing me two manuals. Fortunately she had a printout of the security regulations from the airport website, as well as a 'no objection' email from the Airline, handy. Objections did not last long after that and I got my jackets. I should also add that my daughter does not readily take no for an answer. especially when she's right... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Good Luck!
