New boat doesn't have an automatic fire extinguisher in the engine bay, which is a requirement for most insurance companies.

Has anyone got any experience with installing such devices, and can the whole lot be bought as a kit?

Yes these can be bought as kit from a few suppliers. Just work out the area of your engine bay to get the right size and number and then a suitable place(s) to mount it based on the maufacturers guidelines. Normally only a bracket and couple of screws into a bulkhead.

Excellent. That looks like a sort of stand-alone system. My old Sealine had an electronic system with an LED at the helm. I don't need any gizmo's, just a no-nonsense automatic fire extinguisher for the engine bay!

Good point on the gas thing. Dry powder makes one hell of a mess and with require an engine strip, apart from clearing the mess from the engine bay.

Excuse the slight thread drift but any recommendations for someone in the Southampton area who services heat sensitive auto extinguishers. Need to get mine checked for insurance purposes.

Do they have to be electronic or anything like that or are the old ones with heat sensitive firing mechanisms ok for smaller boats?
I'm with Y Insurance and their policy states:

"There is no cover for any claim arising from fire or explosion on the vessel where the maximum design speed of the vessel exceeds 17 knots if fitted with inboard machinery unless:
a) the vessel is equipped in the engine room with a fire extinguisher system automatically operated, or
b) has controls at the steering position, or
c) controls next to the engine room, and
d) all properly installed and maintained.

Guess your policy document, like mine, will answer your question. Point d) is what reminded me to get mine checked and hence the posting above.
