Autohelm switch wiring

I have what is probably a very simple question. I have a ST1000 with the connector in the cockpit. Below this there is a on/off toggle switch. Inside the cabin on the main panel there is also an on/off switch which is fused.

The autohelm wouldn’t power up and it seems the switch has had it. I’m assuming the switch is in the cockpit to allow you to turn off and regain control if needed without going down below.

The switch was a four pin but I can only find a 2 pin waterproof toggle switch locally. It was wired with live coming into the switch and then live to the socket. Neutral from socket to switch and then again from the switch back to the main panel. Can I simply connect the switch to the red live and have the black go straight from the socket back to the main panel?

Thanks

It would be easier and more reliable to eliminate that switch. There is no point in using that to regain control when all you need to do is press the standby button on the autohelm

Yes, but as Plum says you could eliminate the switch altogether. No local switch is called for in the installation instructions.

OTOH you could get a double pole switch and water proof boot from 12 volt planet. 1 Way Toggle Switches For Auto/Marine Use | 12 Volt Planet
