Autohelm ST50 Plus just beeps at me.

I switched on the navigation and the ST50 plus screen stayed blank and emitted a beeping noise. This happened last year when I lost the depth reading but wiggling the connections cured it. Raymarine's advice was to return the instrument for repair which I should have done last winter. Now I'm stuck. I was wondering whether there are any other reasonably cheap instruments which will take the ST50 log and transducer readings. I'm not worried about the log as I have the GPS, but I feel a bit exposed without any depth reading.

Best is to get a used ST50. Getting it "repaired" by Ray will cost you as much as a new instrument (almost).

In their defence(Raymarine) I recently gave them an 18 month old masthead ST60 transducer which had been totally immersed in water and as it transpired was found to be ruined. They very decently offered me a 25% "trade-in" allowance on a new unit plus socket and cabling all which reduced the replacement cost by about £80( reducing the unit price also reduces the VAT of course).

I should have a word with them first.

If you cannot pick up a used replacement, then I expect that you will find that the new ST60 instrument (bigger cut-out, unfortunately) will work with the existing transducers. You can buy the head (instrument) separately from the rest of the kit. Of course, I would check with Ramarine first, but they have a very good history of maintaining backwards compatability across the range. I recently had to replace my ST 50 Wind head but kept the existing mast-head unit and it works just fine. I now have a fair mix of old and new bits across my Autohelm-series collection of instruments.

Wrong end of the country for you, but Waypoint-1 at Queen Anne's Battery, Plymouth have always done me a good deal on Raymarine bits.

Good luck.

Re: Star Sea Data (Nexus) Compatability?

The ST60 tridata does work with the ST50 senders .. as our ST50 recently went poop ... the mainboard was gone and the LCD was bleached (not that that was an issue). The cost of repairing it was cheaper than a ST60 even with the trade in, but at least I get a new instrument with full warantee with the new one ... the only issue we now have is that the ST50 wind doesn't seem to pick up the speed information across the seatalk to give the "true" wind speed & direction ... not that it really matters ..

Re: Star Sea Data (Nexus) Compatability?

Thanks everyone. I shall give Raymarine a ring tomorrow and compare new ST60 prices with the repair cost. I'm not too worried if the footprint of the ST60 tridata is bigger than the ST50. A smaller footprint would have been a problem.
BTW, over the last three months my lawnmower seized up, the freezer stopped freezing, my cental heating boiler sprung a leak, and over this weekend the dishwasher has gone wrong as well as the ST50. And to cap it all, PNE just lost to West Ham.

Re: Star Sea Data (Nexus) Compatability?

The overall width, depth and height are identical in the ST50 & ST60 ranges .. the cutout for the ST60 is bigger ... also - the screw threads are in different positions so you need to drill out for that too ...
