Background - my boat came with an Autohelm 2000 and 2000+ Both wired into a 3A2P Deck connector plug (ie 2 pin - not seatalk) which has a think and thin male parts.

This weekend during some interesting brisk weather both wires came out their plugs!

Not being on the boat - I have re-stripped and soldered the ends, and have replaced them with the logic below. It would be good to confirm some thinking / assumptions.

Getting them home both have a Blue and Brown wires - Can anyone confirm blue is - and brown +? tinterwebs is not helping me..

Also any ideas on which of the thick and thin plug bits are? I believe that the blue goes to the smaller one, and brown to the bigger one. Any convention with these?

Can these be damaged if plugged in the wrong way round?

Ta.

The manual on Raymarine's site says that brown is positive, but if you connect them the wrong way round no damage will result.

Don't know which way round the plug pins are, but if you can't easily access the back of the socket to check the wire colours then surely a multimeter will tell you.

As Pete says you really have to check the polarity of the socket wiring with a multimeter.

I think the convention is that the larger pin is negative but by no meas sure and there's no guarantee anyway that whoever originally wired it got it right.

Why not take the opportunity of replacing the 3A 2P connectors with Driplugs

1. I will check when back aboard.

2. If not too broken why fix?

Thanks for the replied.

Except that it'll work back to front.

Except that it'll work back to front.

Pardon?

Do you mean it will work normally if the wires are back to front, or if the wires are connected wrongly then the pilot will operate in the opposite direction to what it should?

Either way, I'm pretty sure you're wrong. Have a look at the Raymarine manual.
