Hi I want to keep an eye on my boat so...
Does any one know of a system that can take a picture and automatically send it to my phone or my email account

I would prefer a camera phone solution that uses sms but a power energy pc could be considered (no mains electric is available)

TIA Guy

I would think that a web cam attatched to a laptop would be your best bet, attatch this to a 3g phone, plug the three into a inverter, plug the inverter into you 140amp domestic, whack on a wind turbine and solar panels.

Set up the webcam to take a frame every 10 minutes or WHY, then use a application like AutoFTP 4.5 or simular to transfer the files to a FTP folder, either on your desktop at home , or use someone like Thirdlight to take in the file and using their automated distribution system to forward the file/s to your email.

That could work, or purchase a modernish camera like a Nikon D200 or Canon D40, buy their wireless transmitter with the camera, configure that to dump into your FTP or thirdlight, and go from their. You could either rig up the Wireless to a network if their is one in your marina, or link to a 3g phone again.

BTW. We spent nearly 50k trying to come up with a reliable system to do something not dissimular to this, and The Press Association bought a company called EMPICs to get hold of their "LivePhoto" system, for £20 million, which is a fancy verison of what you want to do!

I am sure someone knows of some simple way to do this, technology moves on!!

may be I could look at pocket pc phones - they could be programmed to do what I want - given a bit of skill.

yes there is wifi in the marina so the laptop route could work
no 3G but gprs so that would be another option.

Thanks for the ideas

how about video phones - when you ring one can they auto answer with the video turned on?

preferably gprs as I doubt there is 3G at Loch Melford

PembrokeshirePromise that 3rd I is great

You should be awarded geek of the night award for that link
(thats a compliment BTW)

ps I could not get the nokia link to work.

Regards Guy

If there's wifi, how about one of these ?

I've played with a couple, and they're pretty good! Connects direct to WIFI, built in web server, so you can see pictures from anywhere on the internet; can also be configured to send email alerts and / or start logging when it detects movement; to store video or stills to an FTP site, or you can leave a remote PC looking at it over an internet connection to record the video. They (PEAK) do a remote control pan/tilt version (but IME, these are a bit fragile). Uses a 12v power supply too, I think.

(No experience of this seller, though.)

I've got a little app that runs on a Sony Ericsson P900 or P910. Send the remote phone a text with a phone number or email address in it, it takes a photo, and sends a picture message or an email back with the photo attached. I knocked it up to find out what my cat did during the day while I was out. Unsurprisingly, he just sleeps all day. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

If you have or can get either of those phones I'll give you the software for free. I'm a geeky nerdy type who works for Sony Ericsson, so I threw together the software myself in my lunch hour.
