I've purchased a Simrad RS87 handset to keep on board as a spare, but the description on the paperwork says:

680245 VHF RS87 DUAL STATION EU INC EXB-AE AUSTRALIAN

It also has "AUSTRALIAN" written on the box in marker pen.

The "INC" bit seems to suggest that it has some extra hardware/software that is not normally included/loaded onto the handset?

Does anyone know if i'll notice any difference? I can try it next weekend, but then i'll be beyond the 7 day distance selling returns period, and the supplier has form when it comes to problems returning items.

It looks like it is a EU unit but for some reason was also programmed with Second country channels at someones request.

Maybe it was shipped to you in error and someone in Oz is missing specific channels.

It is easy enough to check. Does it do things UK wise as per channel list etc. Might also check if it has Marina 1 and Marina 2
as these usually in a radio for the UK. Marina 1 might list in the radio as 37A.

Do the Second country test as per the manual.

Manual.

It is probably fine for a UK vessel

A yachtie friend of mine is looking for one of these
Where did you get it
Are there any more available?

PS
He wants one because his boat has two stations and the master station is below deck.
If he moves his only handset from the lower (master) position to the already wired upper position, nothing works.
It seems that with these sets, you HAVE to have a handset plugged into the master position.

We have a two station setup but personally, I don't rate the Simrad VHF - IMO, it definitely isn't as good as (say) a Standard Horizon
Very flash and super expensive but IMO no good.

I think Nick was only talking about the handset
The transceiver itself would determing what channels are available
I had to remove mine to have the MMSI changed and to add the UK "M" channels
In this case, the handsets are just that - handsets
So I should think that Nick's ones should work - certainly worth a try.

Garmin is same. But if you go to the actual radio black box unit, and swap the two handset cables so that the upper cable is now plugged into the "master handset" socket, and the lower station handset is now plugged into the "second handset" socket, the upper station should work fine without need to buy another handset

Dohhh
Why didn't I think of recommending that!!

There was only one. They're discontinued now, and it tends to be the handset that fails on these things, which is why I bought the spare when I saw it.

It would be worth phoning round the bigger marine electrical places, i'm sure one of them will have a used handset they could sell him.
