Last year I moved from Kent and now live in the village of Audlem in Cheshire. The Shropshire Union Canal passes through the village and is a popular route for narrow boats. Just north of the village is the recently constructed Overwater Marina. From the marina to a lock close to the village is a launch that gives people the chance to be on the canal. It only runs on weekends and bank holidays and is manned by volunteers. They charge a small sum to use the service but all the money goes to the RNLI, despite the RNLI not having a presence on the canal. Since starting in 2010, this sevice has raised over £25,000. I would like to commend them for raising this amount of money. Yes I have taken the trip each way with my wife, daughter and grandson as there is a very good cafe at the marina. So if anyone is visiting Cheshire I would suggest it is a pleasant way to get on the water, rather than the sea and help raise some money for the RNLI.

Audlem is a lovely place to visit in its own right. Last weekend we had the 26th Festival of Transport and the Gathering of Historic Working Canal Boats. These short reports are interesting to read. For the thirsty visitors, we have 3 pubs plus a selection of interesting shops.
