It was suggested a couple of months ago, that audio tape could be used instead of bond breaking tape at the bottom of a teak deck joint before caulking. has anyone actually tried this. It looks to be a similar material and correct width.

There\'s a school of thought...

There's a school of thought which wonders whether using bond-breaker tape is a good idea when working on older decks. The idea of the bond-breaker tape is to create a 2-dimensional bond rather than a 3-dimensional one. For new decks, where the grooves are deep and there’s a lot of sidewall surface area to adhere to, it makes sense. But what about the shallow grooves on an older deck? There’s much less surface area on the sidewalls. If bond-breaker tape is used and the sidewall adhesion breaks down, water goes down the sidewall separation, through the joint at the bottom of the seam, and then under the deck.

On the other hand, if there’s no bond-breaker and the sidewall adhesion breaks down, the joint at the bottom of the seam is still sealed so the water still can't go under the deck. Modern caulking compounds are very flexible and should be able to cope with the stresses of a 3-dimensional bond.

Just a thought.

Re: There\'s a school of thought...

Thanks for that. The teak is new. Just ripped the old stuff up that was rotten and lifting. I'm currently working on the first panel. have acetoned the joints and put two layers of primer on in prep for the bond breaking tape and caulking to form the joint. Only got one reel of bond breaking tape at the moment, hence the question.
