Got to attach 4 pads, to sit the tender on, onto the coach roof, which is GRP sheathed over plywood. For reason of ascetics with the interior of the roof I do not want to screw or through bolt the pads. So I want to “glue” the pads to the roof, either with a standard polyester resin which I’ve got, or epoxy, which I have none. As the pads are fairly small, approx 50x 100 each I’d prefer not to go to expense of buying a pack of epoxy for this job. I am I OK using polyester resin, will it gives a good bond or is epoxy the way to go.

Thanks for your answers

Peter

Sikaflex will do the job.
Mask the area around the pads to make it easier to remove excess sikaflex.
Having fixed the pads. leave 24 hours before using.
(Can't comment on using polyester resin!)

Don't dispute the use of Sikaflex PROVIDING the joint between the GRP and the wooden coachroof is absolutely A1. There will be quite substantial loads transferred to this interface which, despite the drawbacks, would edge me towards through-bolting.

Of course if it is really certain that there isn't an existing problem, or likely to be one, then the Sikaflex is fine.

I fitted some jamming cleats on a previous boat and decided to move them. After undoing the bolts I had a hell of a job breaking the Sikaflex seal.

If using Sikaflex don't try to scrape excess away whilst it's flashing off as you will pull sealer from under the fitting.
Meths on a rag will clean Sikaflex easily and leave a smooth joint.

Sikaflex 292 is better for bonding than the usual 291

3M do a similar adhesive as well

Are these pads just pads, i.e, will the dinghy be strapped down to other strong points? If so sikaflex will be very adequate. The load on the pads will be shear and the sikaflex will be in compression from the lashings or whatever.
If however the pads somehow secure the dinghy, it's different!
I have also had good results with cartridge gun glues like 'no more nails' or the screwfix own brand, fixed wood gunwhales to grp tender, still going strong after 4 years of fairly robust use.
But a tender on deck would need to be tied down to something through bolted imho.
Cheers,

Less ugly alternative is to use dome headed carriage bolts which will give you the strength you need with a less pronounced interior lump, still use the sika or 5200 to seal the plate.
