On my mooring I'd like to replace the current polyester strops with a larger diameter 'polysteel' 8-plait one (the motive is that it floats which is better for this type of mooring). No problem one would think except that I now can't find a shackle which opens wide enough (38mm) which isn't so big that the pin will no longer fit the chain. Ideally I want a 19mm or 22mm dia pin, and while Van Beest do wide-mouthed shackles which should be ideal, the smallest is just too big (and would look silly), see http://www.vanbeest.nl/VanBeest/media/VanBeest/products/Brochures/BEES_12194_BR_wideMouth_ENG.pdf

I have also considered a Crosby link, but the ring type only comes in black iron finish and since it's above the water I need galvanised.

Any ideas?

PS: a source of polysteel of only 25 or 28mm dia would be good!

Small shackle to fit the chain connected to a large shackle to take the strop. Might not have been clear.

Thanks for this. Yes it was clear, and indeed it's probably what I'll have to do.

But the difficulty is the sheer size of the shackle I'll need to use: it will be simply enormous, not to mention expensive. So I wondered whether there is an alternative design of 'joining thing' which can open wide but actually isn't so big once in use. I'm kicking myself for not having put the bow shackle in place before splicing the loop as the rope would go easily through the bow of quite a small shackle but won't go past its jaws.
