While out in Southampton Water yesterday, a "routine weather and navigation" broadcast announcement came over on Ch16. Nothing wrong with that I thought, but then the announcement continued on Ch16. Now that is unusual!!

My interest was captured and I listened more intently to hear that the voice had a very strong Scottish accent. Odd I thought, I can hardly understand a word!! I then heard the guy say Aberdeen!!!

For a very short period of time I had actually - on a 6.5 metre rib - picked up a VHF transmission from Scotland. Just goes to show what a high pressure system can do!!

There is a chap on the Shipplotter AIS forum who received a VHF AIS signal from 712 miles yesterday. Aberdeen is only 450 miles as the crow flies.

This is pretty normal and actually happens quite often, as any Radio Amateur will tell you. This particular type is refered to as "troposheric ducting" of the signal.

Years ago, I used to be in regular contact with most European counties on 144 and 433 MHz (marine band being 156 MHz). I also 'worked' most of the World including Australia and NZ on 50 MHz (the old band I/II TV band).

Some of the real buffs even bounce signals off of the moon and back to the Earth.
