Hi

I recall reading somewhere that the bus from Athens to Preveza has two different routes. One route goes North of the Gulf of Amvrakikos which does not go near the Aktio boat yards. The other goes South of the Gulf which is the one I want. I need to get off just before the tunnel at Aktio.

I have tried the internet but no info. Any help with a link or timetable please?

We did this in reverse last summer, Aktio to Athens. Yes there is a stop just by Aktio yard just short of the underpass but Aktio yard will pick you up if that's where you are heading. The coach terminal in Athens is a long way out of town so you will need a taxi from the airport. Took about 5 hours and we did go the south route, goes via Corinth. Ring one of the yards as they know the timetable, at least Aktio did.

Unless the coach station changed location last year ... The X93 bus goes from outside airport arrivals door every 25 minutes or so to Kithisos bus station in Athens which is where you get the coach to Preveza. Takes aprox 50 minutes and costs under 4 euro. You dont need a taxi.

Preveza bus station is on the edge of town. If you end up there you will need a taxi to Aktio.

Cant help with the north/south question

Catch the X93, costs 10% of the taxi and there's three an hour.

Of course if there are 10 of you the taxi is economic - (we once got 19 into an Issigonis' Mini during Rag Week, only 3 men who were never the same again)

When we flew out to Aktio last march, we took the new Suburban railway (Proastiakos) straight from Athens airport all the way to Corinth (thus avoiding having to travel into Athens city centre & back out again on the bus), and caught the Athens-Preveza bus at its stop in Corinth.
Most of the buses go via the north shore of the Amvrakikos gulf, though, unfortunately, so we had to get a taxi from Preveza bus station to Cleopatra (about €20 IIRC).

We did that trip and as stated the Preveza bus went around the gulf and took ages. I believe some do go south about via the tunnel, possibly from memory alternate ones, but I am happy to be corected on that. Maybe Jim B's website will have more details.

Another option might be the Levkas bus and get off in Vonitsa and take a taxi/call your boatyard/hang around waiting for a brit in a car who has come to get bread etc.

Endorse the x93 though. Got fleeced 45e 5 years ago for a taxi ride from the airport, though I did get a free lecture on how the olympics will leave us broke, both individually and as a nation. Beat them to it on both counts.

I missed that opportunity - thanks for the tip.
It will be faster, cheaper and far more convenient thn using the coaches. You can (if you're going to Preveza catch the coach - you'll have to go out to the canal-end stop - from Corinth)

Thanks for the info. I did some more googling and found this English website with Greek bus timetable. Apparantly the Ktel bus times are a national secret for Greeks only.

Quote from the website ... Below is a list of links to local KTEL websites containing schedules and ticket fares (subject to change) for Greek buses, which was compiled after the ex-KTEL website removed all free information on schedules in March 2008 and became a paid phone service in Greek only. See “KTEL website” to learn why. ... End Quote.

After reading the replies that the north bound route predominates, and especially the 20 euro taxi fare from Preveza to Aktio to backtrack, I may take the Athens bus to Lefkada then the 3 euro bus to Aktio. Not so much about money than convenience because the bus from Athens arrives at the same terminus that the Aktio bus will depart from.

When changing buses at Isthmia you will find two Preveza bus alternatives. One goes via Arta (turns right at Amfilochia) and is indicated as such. The other turns left at Amfilochia and goes via Vonitsa and Aktio but was not indicated as such when we last travelled that way. Sorry, don't know the numbers but the ladies on the desk at Isthmia will advise. The bus driver will stop at the traffic lights just outside the yards if asked.

Any chance you have the link for the train schedule? That sounds a lot faster than the bus route.

prevessa/lefkada

yes but get the timing right. if your in a hurry. get off in vonitsa and taxi to aktio. if not into lefkada bus station and change there. there is not much difference between taxi fares vonitsa or prevessa. will cost the same after having a meal in lefkada waiting for the bus??

Not a lot actually.

Bus: X93 express, average wait time 12 minutes; 1 hour to Kiffissou; average wait time for Corinth 30 min; 1 hour to Corinth = 2:45

Train: Av wait time (Jun 2010; may have improved) 30min, 1:30 travel = 2:00

Shared transport mid April?

Anyone travelling out to Aktio (or other Preveza yards) mid April? Any potential in sharing a taxi/ car hire or other means of transport from Athens?
Just a thought, little research done so far!!
