Evening all.. Not sure what forum I should be using for this query, however I'm sure advice will be forthcoming nevertheless.. We will be arriving in Athens Airport mid dayish early May,and want to get to the bus station which has the buses for Preveza..What is the quickist way from Airport to Bus station and more importantly which Bus station is it? As far as I can figure out,we take the Airport bus into Stygmata square, metro to Omonia and get a bus from there to the Bus station..Is there a better way? All info very welcome.( PS have tried the cropduster Athens-Pvk,but a bit of a shambles!)

Not in a great rush, but want to get to Preveza same night.
Carrying a helluva lot of stuff ( airline weight limit)
Two peeps.

Yes, that's the way I did it.

Surprisingly, if you imagine the large amounts of busses that come and go from a major city bus station, it's hidden away up a few narrow alleys from the main road, and the bus I used just stopped on the main road, so make sure you get directions from the bus driver before you get off.

If you find yourself a bit lost in Athens, the people are not as helpful as Greeks everywhere else, and getting directions from them is a bit like trying to stop one overtaking you on a mountain pass.

Take some lunch and plenty of water too. The bus is not air conditioned and the only stop is in a greek hotel carpark - miles from anywhere, forcing you to buy lunch / drinks in the hotel where a packet of biscuits cost about £4.00.

But it's OK, I think RichardPerou is about to offer you a lift...

We have come back from Preveza to athens by bus,so know the score re sarnies water etc.,but are unsure of best way to get to bus station from airport ..ie other way round .

The route you say is the way I did it: Airport bus into Stygmata square, metro to Omonia and get a bus from there to the Bus station, but with a bit of getting lost in the middle.

If I was doing it again, I think a taxi would be tempting, particular if you're on one of the flights that arrives at 0430.

Yes....taxi is an option we have considered.. Other question is ..what is the name of the bus station which has the buses for Preveza, levkas etc. I know there are two bus stations and don't wan't to go to wrong one!!

I think it's something like Terminal B. When you get to Stygmata square, there are a few official looking bods about, you can confirm it with them.

Hi James,
We are making the same trip next week. There is a regular (every hour or so) bus straight from Athens airport to the bus station. It costs less than 3 euros each and the bus is marked E93
You will then need a KTel bus to Preveza - all the times and routes are on their web site at http://www.ktel.org/en/timetable.asp
If you check the route times you will see that some are shorter, these are the ones that go via the tunnel at Preveza and on these you can get off at the tunnel and walk the 1/2 mile or so to the boatyards.
I've have arrived in Athens to find that there is a bus strike - in which case there is quite a good train service into Athens.
If you've not used the bus before then remember to get your ticket stamped once you get on by inserting it in one of the machines (on the bus) - otherwise you will wind up the inspector if he boards.
Best regards,
Henry

Re: Athens bus stations.OOPS!

I have just checked my spelling ..and it's SYNTAGMA Square...apologies to all Athenians,Greeks, and anyone who might have been offended. Anyway ..thanks for all the info.

Re: Athens bus stations. Henry

Henry...I was hoping that there was a service from the A/port straight to the bus station, and you have answered my prayers!.It will save a lot of messing around the city if we can go straight there, especially as we are carrying the max.baggage..lots of spares, etc! I was also planning to ask the driver to let us off the bus at the south end of the tunnel and walk the last bit to the yard.. as you will know this saves doubling back from the town by taxi and also saves a euro or twenty for beers.!!. Hope to see you over there ...have a good trip.

Re: Athens bus stations. Henry

James, There are 2 routes to Preveza, the longer one goes around the Gulf of Amvrakia so doesn't go anywhere near the tunnel. I think the bus that leaves Athens at 17.00 does go via the tunnel and arrives there at about 21.20
One tip - when you are launched get the port police to stamp your transit log. They should do by law but often don't bother in areas where there are many yachts. We were launched last year in Porto Heli where they don't bother to stamp. The next port that we visited was a long way away in Volos where they read me the riot act and told me that I either had to return to Porto Heli to get it stamped or pay a fine of over 1000 euros. I eventually returned to Porto Heli and just made sure that I anchored everywhere before I got there.
Have a good trip

No be very careful of the taxis, they will rip you off,
Best way arrange the price with the taxi before you
get in, we got charged 50 euros for 25 minute ride

Re: Port police

Henry...We are being launched at the Cleopatra yard...where should we get the transit log stamped?should we go across to Preveza town or would the office in Levkas be OK for this...I can always find out from the office at Cleo of course but your tip is welcome. We came back from Preveza to Athens one time the long way.....A very long and stop-start trip. Better to go the south route if poss. We will try to get let off at the tunnel and walk as the taxis rip you off from the town to the yards. anything from 15E (reasonable) to 30 E (scandalous)
Cheers .

No sorry can't offer a lift this year. I once had to move a load of gear and so had a taxi all the way. If there is more than two it is very competitive if you are also lugging gear. Anyhow check out the price; It is on the Levkas site.

Re: Port police

You will be fine going to Lefkas. We do this each year and its far easier to go to Lefkas thatn get it done in Preveza for some reason.
If you can go before 09:00 as the previous shift is still coming to an end and they are lessi interested in going through your papers with a fine tooth comb.

Re: Port police

Blooming Port Police! - On Kos they clearly had nowt to do as it cost me one and a half days of Fmucking around and a trip to Athens just to satisfy the Port Police. Make sure you have the originals of:

Registration Cert (part 1 or SSR)
Insurance for the boat
Invoice or bill of sale.

This will allow you to get the transit log. Costs about 30 euro.
Once you have that it is 10 minutes to get it stamped.
One tip, you dont have to go when you arrive and again when you leave, go once when you arrive, tell them your inteneded time to leave and they will ususally stamp it twice.
