Oh no, not a flag ettiquette question. The joy of your stuff Steve is that it keeps these questions away from here.

I think its dusk to 08.00 if on board, 2000 if dusk is later.

Wear a defaced

daisychain 24 hours a day ... but stick it on your hull. "There's a red one, and a blue one, and a white one, and they're all made out of ticky-tacky, and they all look just the same."

Whilst in harbour shold be worn from dusk to dawn, at sea is optional, only required when entering port but in reality is worn all the time. Some snotty yacht clubs insist it should be struck at dusk but most people just fly it whilst on board.

I'd rather be sailing... :)

Never

unless you are in another nation's territorial waters.

To do otherwise is to risk stirring up this amiable bulletin board.

On reflection, I rather fancy that a Moody 38 would not suit you. There is a nice little Scandinavian motor sailer called a TROLL which seems able to accomplish all that you desire.

warships

Of course, it should also be "dipped" to a warship who will then do the same.

I guess this is from a day and age where warships would happily blow "inferior" mechant ships out of the water if they didn't respect them but I'm sure one of the grey monsters leaving Portsmouth wouldn't even notice you doing it...

Re: warships

You are therefore empowered to carry out said test onbehalf of the forum when you next meet one of the said vessels.

Reeds

Reed's Nautical Companion says "Ensigns are hoisted at 0800 in summer and 0900 in winter, and lowered at sunset or 2100 whichever is the earlier." Additionally, all vessels (except those registered as fishermen) must wear their national colours when entering or leaving a foreign port.

Re: warships

I also got an appropriate, not rude, response when I dipped to a small RN ship tied to the quay in St Vaast some years ago. What did that jolly have to do with the defence of the realm?

i thought the proverb was
give a man a fish and he will eat for one day
give a man the means to fish and will sit by a river bank all day slowly getting pissed

that is what seems to happen round here anyway.

Beer! Now there's a temporary solution.
