A Conservative Party policy commission has proposed holding asylum seekers in island holding centres.

The Tory group says that using British offshore islands would provide "clean, safe, habitable environments with a low population density and which would offer no prospects for economic advancement" for the asylum seekers.

I wonder which islands they have in mind, any guesses ?

Yes, I saw that one too, but only the headline. Are they talking about a processing centre with just a few people or all of them? If the latter this could be hundreds of thousands of people. How much will it cost to create the buildings and infrastructure to support them, how long will it take to build, and who will have the spare capacity to build this in a remote island on top of their existing commitments? How will it be policed and what will happen to people who leave for the mainland?

These things always sound attractive until detailed questions start getting asked. Do Australia have an offshore processing centre, only handling far fewer people?

We don't have any prospects for ecomonic advance here, no matter how hard we try, but we aint got no room for asylum seekers either, if they send 'em to the outer hebrides they will probably drink it dry and the Scots would not be happy when all the malt is gone!!

How crowded is the isle of Sheppey these days??

Re: Oi hands off Sheppey.

We have only just got rid of the last conservative MP to get free board and lodging
at the local HMP.Still the new novel should have a lot of local interest.

Careful...

Careful what you say - it's not far for those muddy-footed Essex natives to travel across the river to oldgit land!

We'll take 'em and will welcome the diversity that they bring.

In fact did we not move a lot of undesirables to the northern part of that really big island to our left some time ago?

There's a helpful guide to various possibilities in the Grauniad today, <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,3604,1038840,00.html>here</A>.

My personal preference would be the Isle of Wight, with particular reference to that place with the lawn, flagstaff and cannon at the mouth of Cowes Harbour.

The Isle of Wight

would be ideal!

I once proposed that Mrs Thatcher should offer to swap the IOW for Hong Kong - it's about the right size, and like HK sits on a harbour with two entrances so a sailing vessel can always enter and leave and there is not much silting, as Alexandeer Dalrymple pointed out.

The economic benefits to both Britain and China would have been immense....

However......

Re: Osea

That has a history of internment. They used to send alcoholics there to dry out.
