hi guys
we have recently got ourselves a 05 sunseeker that is equipped with some old furuno nav equipment.
the plan is to get this all upgraded and changed out for some new shiny MFD's in the off season, but for us to use the boat this summer i have a few niggles which im hoping someone of wisdom can help with.

im having an issue with our depth gauge not displaying any depth readings.
we have
seperate auto pilot which shows course, heading and works
gps which shows speed, cog and works
a radar/plotter, which seems to work
a depth gauge, which does not work on any fronts

the depth gauge seems to have other menus which in theory should show speed and course etc, but it doesn't appear to be receiving any data from anything, it worked when we got the boat, and seems to occasionally display something, but to no rhyme or reason . where should i start looking as i don't really know the older system setup.

or to better that, for some beer and a bag of crisps, is anyone in the ocean village area clued up and willing to stick their head in and give a budding Diy'er a hand?
thanks
rich

If it's getting its depth info from an airmar sensor which is quite elderly - these are known to fail after, say, 10yrs or so. You may need to replace this?

thanks for this, we have 2 airman triducers either side of the keel, presumably the rd30 takes an average of both?

it surprises me both have completely gone for the display to be showing nothing, depth, temp or speed? are they removable without sinking whilst in the water?

Certainly unusual for both to fail. No - they work independently of each other I think. You may be able to test them by entering the Furuno Navnet menu via the Furuno plotter & see if they are outputting an nmea 0183 depth sentence - like dpt or dbt. You can probably download the manual from the Furuno USA website.
If you need to replace one you can do it with the boat in the water - bit of an unpleasant procedure because you'll ship an amount of seawater while you pull out the transducer from its holder & quickly replace it with the blanking plug. Google the airmar website etc

So checking my rd30 the in out port shows theat dbt and dpt are on, I’m getting temperature( which seems wrong) but no depth..

I can’t seem to see on the plotter where I can seem the nmea sentence tho.

Just to update, I have depth showing on my plotter now, I changed the input on the plotter for depth from etr to nmea and it displayed a depth, but still no depth only temperature on the rd30. Could it be one traduced does the plotter and one does the depth display , and it’s this one that’s faulty?
Thanks
Rich

Yes it could be that. I'm not familiar with your VX2? system as mine is the Navnet 3D. Could you try switching the transducer inputs & see what happens- even if you have to temporarily move the rd30.

That’s a good plan, and your right it is a vx2,
I assume as the plotter has the sounder option, and the depth sentence was being supplied through the etr sounder and now isn’t maybe the etr box is faulty?
How do I set the rd30 to accept its information from nmea

On the Furuno USA website you can download all the old manuals. See RD30
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the Rd30.
The ETR 6/10n boxes can fail. You can sometimes pick used ones up on ebay as lots of people have swapped them for later models.
When we bought our boat it was fitted with your system but I bought used Navnet 3D stuff & swapped it over (it's a long job!). Sold the old stuff on eBay.
I've got a pc running Timezero which will communicate with the Navnet 3D system & transfer waypoints and routes etc. Result - now the system is far less clunky & much more user friendly.
