Hey everybody, this may be quite a long shot, but is there anyone out there who would like to share his/her experiences with an Askeladden 805 ? Especially on engine reliability and technical issues ?? Much obliged....
I bought an Askeladden 805 commuter autumn last year, it is from 2004 and has sailed about 500 hours. I only got to use it for about a month before winter, the engine is a Mercruiser Cummings 4.2 300hp, the engine runs smoothly. Other owners have had trouble with the drive (Bravo III), I will try to install a driveshower, we'll see how it works.
Some of the equipment are trimflaps, bow propeller, Raymarine chartplotter and radar, the chartplotter works fine, but the radar has been damaged during shipping from Denmark to Greenland.
The sailing season will begin again shortly, I expect to be sailing again around next week, you can contact me on bjarnel@ati.gl if you want further information.
Hey, thanks for your reaction ! Could you please specify the problem(s) with the bravo III leg ? On the boat I am currently looking at, they have also replaced or repaired the drive...officially because the leg had struck an underwater object. But I am not 100% sure or convinced by their explanation
Just saw your post, we sold a lot of these over the past couple of years and we had a lot of drives fail. The reason was insufficient cooling, the engine has its own raw water inlet under the boat so the transom inlet is blanked off, its imperative that the 'S' hose between the drive and shield has about 2" cut out of it so that water can circulate through the water passage in the drive to cool it. Also we retro fitted on every one a drive shower as these boats have a hull extension each side of the drive which reults in a low pressure area when running pulling water away from the upper drive section which needs the most cooling.
Had no problems after these mods were done.
The boat is a bit slow getting on the plane but performs Ok when up and running.
Thank you very much for this useful information! I'm now sure that the drive is a weak point: all the information so far points to that....I'll have a word with the dealer who is selling the boat.
