Met a raggie in the Indian last friday night very friendly lady asked her why sail boaters dont like power and she said there a lot of them are just jealous and too tight to pay for the diesel opinions ?????
I enjoy sailing as well as power. They both have their place. I hate the power versus sail football attitudes amongst some people. The main problem is ignorance towards each others chosen form of pleasure boating. Each has different skill requirements but unfortunatley ignorance creates friction. All forms of boating should be promoted. When we do eventually get time to enjoy ourselves on the water why not respect others want to as well, whatever their chosen boat. I have seen some diabolical boats both power and sail - but i respect it maybe someones pride and joy and if they get pleasure from it - good luck to them.......
After a particlarly gutty X channel berthed next to MOBO who on seeing us hanging out clothes and bedding offered use of his tumble dryer, and followed up with iced G&T in crystal.
I have been motor boating for seven years around the Littlehampton area, boating is a very sociable activity and lots of people do wave cheerily at each other, I have however noticed often I don’t get a wave returned from a raggie, but it is only the odd one, I also don’t get a wave back from the odd motor boat, my point is that boating is shared by a cross section of the human population just like anything else and to judge a whole group by the actions of a few is limited imagination in my opinion.
We all share a great activity and should keep tribalism out of it.

Totally correct! I do get a bit miffed by people who ask slanted questions that try to impose their own viewpoints on the answer, and can only think that they have been listening to tony bliar and his associates too much.
IMHO the differences between raggie and mobo are a mixture of a simple difference of viewpoint through to fundamental difference in attitudes. Simply put:
Raggies
Go out in a boat for the peace and solitude it provides, and an ability to slow down.
Are more interested in the voyage than the destination.
Will persevere with sailing rather than motor sailing because of the sense of achievement and the quietness.
Mobos
Are normally more interested in the destination than the journey.
Live life to the full, and are impatient to arrive.
Use their boat as a motorised caravan (or as a vehicle to pursue another sport - skiing, diving etc) rather than as a means to get out onto the water.
Have possibly spent a lot of their life as a raggie, but are no longer physically able to manage a raggie and have converted to mobo to snatch a few more years at sea.
Yes I know sweeping generalisations, that do not cover all aspects (thats why they are generalisations!). Why should the differences matter greatly, after all we all get our enjoyment primarily from getting on the water in one way or another. I suspect it is just a basic misunderstanding of how each views life that could easily be resolved by sharing experiences. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
I think you'll find it's not "the power" we object to. It's people trying to stir up the whole raggie vs mobo thing.
If I wanted a mobo, I'd buy a mobo. I just don't, simple as that. If you like mobo's, good on you. I may even give you a wave next time you pass /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
My sailing boat has a motor. When I want to motor, I motor. I have the option. And no, I do not want to pay enormous sums of money for fuel for a craft which does not have an alternative motive force; where you sit behind a wheel (which I can do at any time in a car). I also like quietness and so, sails will be a natural first choice for me. Motor boat noise (especially ones with many horses) impinges on my enjoyment of the environment, even when on calm days the mobo may be many miles away.
I am sure though that they can be very nice people - even the lady who made the idiot remark.
Well I own both, and live on the motor barge. But consider myself more of a sailor.
Don't dislike "mobo's" as such; but the jerks who motor up and down a quiet river (with a 6kt max speed) at anything up to 20kt, with external speakers on max - they really get up my nostrils.
When they go past at 2am, speakers on, 2ft from my boat, waking my kids up - yeah, I swear at powerboaters.
Ah well, we Targa owners do suffer. The raggies wish they had our practical virtues and the mobos our sleek looks /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Welcome to the forum.
Suspect there is a bit more to pay attention to on saily boat when on the move, unlike mobo where only concern is to look where going and not axshually bash into anything.
